Awaiting biopsy & tests - I’m terrified but can’t say it

I'm 28 and found a large (3cm) lump in my left breast about 2 weeks ago on a Saturday. On the Monday I went straight to the docs and now have a breast clinic appointment on Monday 10 August. I've been holding it together really well, even my family are impressed, but I'm absolutely terrified and the waiting has intruded on every part of my life.

I'm so scared! I haven't slept properly for 2 weeksand can't focus during the day (also trying to work from home).

What can I expect from an ultrasound, potential mammogram, and biopsy?

Are there any indicators I can use to tell what it is?

How long does it take to get the results?

What happens afterwards?

Thanks for listening. Just didn't know what else to do!

  • Hi Sockgoblin

Your user name made me chuckle !

My daughter, 21 at the time, found a lump on her breast last year. She went to the breast clinic and after an examination she was sent for an ultrasound at the same time as they tend to do everything on the same day at our hospital, I assume it's the same everyelse. Needless to say she was fine thank goodness and it was something they thought which had been caused by trauma even though she couldn't remember anything happening to her.

So they will do a ultrasound first to see if they can identify it, it doesn't hurt though the jelly can be a little cold !!

I hope everything goes well for you, let me know how you get on and if you want to talk you know where I am.

  • Hi the waiting on appointments is the hardest. At my appointment I had examination from consultant , mammogram and biopsy then back to see the consultant who told me there and then I had a suspicious mass, my results were back the following week and unfortunately for me is was cancer. I didn’t find the biopsy too bad but was really bruised afterwards. Had a lumpectomy the following week then 15 sessions of radiotherapy and tamoxifen for 10 years. As I say the waiting is the hardest bit , I just wanted to get on with whatever treatment. You are really young so have age on your side and most lumps found are other things like cysts so try not to worry (I know it’s easier said than done) . Best of luck and whatever happens you’ve got this xxx nicky
