Fibroadenoma or cancer?

Hi, I am going out of my mind with worry and was hoping to gain some advise from others who may be experiencing something similar. Around 10 weeks ago, I found a lump in my right breast and when I went to the GP she herself, found a lump in my left breast that she found to be concerning. She referred me to the urgent breast clinic and I had my appointment 10 days later. At the breast clinic the nurse felt the lumps, marked the area and sent me straight for an ultrasound scan. The scan confirmed the lump in the right breast to be hormonal changes however the consultant seemed concerned about the lump in my left breast. She asked to perform a cut core biopsy which she had to do 4 times (very uncomfortable). She said that in most cases lumps like this in young girls (I am 24), are called fibroadenoma. She then said that should something else come up on the results they would ask me to come back to the clinic. It has now been just over a week and I haven't heard anything. I am going out of my mind with worry. I have done the one thing you shouldn't do and googled everything possible and what she showed me on the ultrasound scan screen, looked very different to the usual fibroadenoma lumps I have seen on the internet. How long has everybody waited for results? Should I be worried that I haven't heard anything yet or is no news, good news in these circumstances? Thank you so much in advance for any words of advise. x

    Hi Lamy,

Welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry for the reason that you've joined us. It is always a scary time when you are waiting for results, partly because there are so many unknowns at this stage. Believe it or not, you will find it easier once you get a diagnosis, irrespective of the outcome.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 11 years and know just how worrying this can be. In both cases I had to wait one week for my results. It can take longer in some parts of the country than others to get your results, but is usually between 1 - 2 weeks. If you haven't heard from the clinic by then, you could phone your consultant's secretary and as if your results are back yet.

I hope that you hear your results soon. Fibroadenomas are usually benign, so here's hoping!  Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
