Worried!

Hi All,

just wondering if anyone has any advice for me please!

since last july i have experienced bleeding during and after sex, sometimes just in the moment and sometimes for up to 2 weeks after. I have already been to the doctors and have had an ultrasound and an internal scan with everything being clear.

I have been bleeding now for 2 weeks after sex (i had come off my period 1 week before intercourse) and i am not due on my period for a few days but i am bleeding quite heavily today (8 tampons so far ) i called the doctor and said i want to book in for a smear test as everywhere i looked online it said bleeding during/after sex is the main symptom of cervical cancer. The doctor told me i cant have a smear because im not due on until aug 2021!! they said they would refer me back to the gynae clinic but that was 10 days ago and ive not had a letter and i feel like the doctor just said it to shut me up really - she said 'your smear was fine, your tests didnt show anything so what do you want' :(

I just dont know what to do, ive started to look at booking a private smear or colposcopy but dont know if i need more urgent care with the ongoing bleeding. Also not sure if i am just on my period now and if i go to the doctors they might just be like 'its just your period'

sorry im kind of rambling and apologies for being a bit graphic! Im just getting a bit scared and don't want to wait for a smear in August 2021 when clearly something is not right! :(

thanks for any replies in advance!

  • Hello RobynJS,

You're doing the right thing in flagging this bleeding with your doctor. It's good that they have done an ultrasound and an internal scan and that everything is clear. I hope that you won't have to wait too long to see the gynaecology specialist - they really are the experts in this area so it's good that the doctor has referred you. When you see the specialist, perhaps you could ask whether it would be beneficial for you to have a smear. As it sounds like you were not completely convinced by your GP's response, you could also try and get a second opinion. You can find out more about this on this page.

I hope that you will hear from others who have been in a similar position before and that they will come and share their experience with you.

Best of luck for your appointment - I hope it all goes well and that the bleeding subsides soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Robyn

With the symptoms you are describing, a smear would not be the usual course of action, as this is about detection of abnormal cells rather than a test to diagnose symptoms. In any case, if you are not due to have a smear it is unlikely the test would be carried out as the guidelines follow a set pattern for the timing of smear tests. You need a referral to a gynaecologist to investigate your symptoms, so I would check to ensure your doctor has made a referral and see if you can get an idea of when you can be seen. Definitely do not wait, as you have symptoms which need investigating by a specialist rather than a gp.
