Biopsy results

Hello everyone, I'm new to the group. I had a mole when I was a child that was removed from my back. The results were that there were cancer cells but they weren't active. So now I'm 29 and had another mole that started to change shape and had black dots in it. I was referred for a biopsy straight away. I've had it removed now and it's been around 3 weeks. My gp surgery called me today and said the dr needs to speak to me about my results and he arranged me an appointment for Wednesday. Cancer rates are very high in my family on my dads side, all different types. My dad has had throat cancer (never smoked), then prostate cancer, then a mild form of skin cancer called 'bowens disease'. I stupidly used sunbeds when I was young due to being insecure about my body. Now I'm scared that I'm gonna be ill. I feel nauseaus and tired all the time but I've never paid attention so hope it's not related.

What I basically want to know is if anyone has recieved results in the same way but it's been nothing? Or does it mean they've found something seeing as they need to speak to me? I suffer with anxiety so the waiting is worse than the diagnosis for me.

  • Hi,

You can't really tell what the results are going to be I'm afraid. It's unusual for a GP to give results, it's usually the hospital that did the biopsy that contacts the patient, unless your GP practice removed the mole? If it was done at the hospital it may be that they've sent the results to your GP instead of them contacting you direct. Some hospitals are doing this due to Covid so it may be that your GP is going to tell you that your mole was like your earlier one - dysplastic (atypical) and it needs monitoring?

I'm sorry that your family has a history of cancer, however other types of cancer won't have any connection with melanoma. Using sunbeds though is a high risk factor for getting melanoma so please don't use them again, especially after having at least one dysplastic mole. Your nausea and tiredness won't be linked either, I'm pretty sure that will be due to the stress and worry you are under.

I hope your GP appointment on Wednesday brings you good news - please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)
