Swollen lymph node for over a year

Hi,

This is my first time posting here so I would appreciate some help!

I first noticed a lump in my neck (posterior cervical lymph nodes) almost a year ago. I spoke to a doctor who said watch and wait for 6-8 weeks and then he would send me for a scan. I wasnt worried so left it and now nearly a year later I mentioned it to another doctor who has booked in a blood test. It was confirmed that it is a single swollen lymph node. But I have no other symptoms - the doctor was asking about night sweats etc so I know what they were getting at.

Anyway, Im not too much of a worrier but I am waiting for my blood test in a couple of weeks time so would be interested in others with a similar experience. I am in my mid 20s so Im not freaking out that it may be cancer as I feel it is unlikely. But I wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience whether that be a cancer diagnosis or otherwise. Did you have other symptoms? Did the lump grow significantly over a year or so and how big was it? What happened after having a blood test? Thanks

Just to add an update incase anyone comes across this in future as I found old posts reassuring when I was anxious. I had another lump come up next to  the first one so that made me worry. Bloods came back clear and I was given an emergency ultrasound (told there was a 2 week wait, however they told me it would be atleast 3 weeks before it would even be booked in - I called up a couple of days later and was told they could fit me in the following day so definitely worth chasing them up every few days if you dont hear back). Anyway when I went to the ultrasound the man said he would give me results immediately. He was very thorough and said that it is lipoma and the new lump that has appeared is a healthy lymph node. My GP has booked in an appointment on Wednesday to discuss with me but obviously there is nothing to worry about. Hope this helps someone else going through a similar stressful time x

  • Hi there, I noticed a lump 6 months ago and am awaiting a biopsy. I have been having night sweats quite a lot lately however that could also be the menapause but I have also notice my skin is very itchy lately and I'm fatigued, again that could be the menapause, it's all very confusing. I hope all will be ok for you

  • My lump is 2 1/2 cm and sometimes slightly painful, I have had no infections for at least 8 months so I don't think it's due to an infection or injury, would just love biopsy to be over and all ok, it's a waiting came

  • I've had a swollen lymph node under my armpit for about 15 years now when i was a teenager. Every now and again it gets sore but othertimes it's just a painless lump.  I had to have it biopsied at the time and it thankfully wasn't cancerous.  I've thought about getting it checked out again since it's been so many years and i'm now in my 30s but it doesn't feel like it's gotten any bigger in all honesty but it's still one of those nagging worries that comes to the forefront of my mind every now and again.  Hope you get an answer on yours quickly.

  • Well my lump was cancer, but i had a primary site (tonsil) so it was definitely different to you.

I agree it is probably nothing to worry about in your case, i hope you get good results.

Can i ask why bloods are taking so long?

    Good luck

  • Sorry for being dumb, but what do you mean you had a primary site?

Urgh, I have no idea. My doctor said she would arrange for a different doctor to see me regarding the resilts because she is off this week, so she was pnviously expecting them to get me seen sooner for a blood test, but the receptionist booked me in for 2 and half weeks time. Then I guess ill have to wait 3-5 days for results so its abit of an annoying wait. If I was a worrier Id be going out of my mind!! Im just keeping busy and putting it to the back of my mind for now though.

Anyway, I hope you managed to get treatment ok for your lump and thank you for replying.

  • Thank you, Im sure it will be the same for me as most other people seem to have other symptoms too.

    Thanks for replying

  • Thanks for replying. Let me know how you get on. Hopefully you get the all clear soon x

  • Hi Jess, i mean that i had a big lump come up in one tonsil at a similar time to lymph node. The tonsil was the origonal cancer.

I dont think for a minute that is the case with you!! I am astonished at how long they are taking to test however- that would drive me insane, but it does show they are not concerned
