Quick biopsy results and being told to come in — bad sign?

Hello and thank you for reading about my situation. A week ago, my 55-year-old mother had a uterine polypectomy and hysteroscopy after a family doctor redirected her to an OB-GYN. The initial observation was good but a polyp was still removed and sent in for a biopsy. The procedure went well and she was back on her feet a day later.

Eight days later, she gets a call saying that the results from the biopsy are in and that she needs to come in for an apointment at the start of the week. We know that a biopsy can take weeks and weren't expecting such quick results, especially given the backlog due to the coronavirus. I am now beside myself worrying that the reason everything happened so quickly is because the biopsy results were bad and the situation is urgent. Wouldn't it have taken longer otherwise? And wouldn't they have called to say good news instead of making her come in to see the doctor again?

This is our first time having this type of cancer scare for anyone close and I would very much appreciate any information this community has. How long did it take for you to get your biopsy results? Those of you who were made to come in, were the news good or bad? I know that it doesn't help to worry but I still am. I do not have any siblings and cannot lose her. Thank you for listening and advising.

  • I had a telephone appointment booked to receive the result of my FNA biopsy. The hospital's Appointments Office phoned and asked me to come a day earlier, to see the consultant in person rather than over the phone.

I assumed this meant bad news, but the news was simply that the biopsy didn't get any useful tissue and therefore I would need a further biopsy before a diagnosis could be made.

I think all you can read into your mother's situation is that (1) the hospital has received the results back from the lab, and (2) the hospital has an appointment slot available. The news could go either way.

I hope your mother's appointment goes well.

  • Thank you. I am trying to stay positive.

  • I had a biopsy two days ago and was told before I left the hospital that they would see me a week later - so not really sure what to think, I  have an appointment confirmed for next Wednesday (exactly as Oncologist said),  I hope all goes well with your mum Ronnie

  • Hi, I know this is a worrying situation.  Obviously different area of the body but my dad had a biopsy some years back and was informed over the phone that he needed a further operation asap to clear what he had. So I guess it depends on the organisations availability of appointments.  My dad is fine now by the way.

Try to remain positive because it's good the hospital has contacted to guys in a timely manner and regardless of the result think forward. Do what is necessary to maintain good health.  Good luck with appointment wishing your mum well.
