Early Stage Lung Cancer

Hi Guys My Mum has recently been diagnosed with an early Stage lung Cancer. MRI and PET Scans have shown a small cancerous node of 1.2cm. A Biopsy was not possible because of the size. Because of this she is being referred directly to the surgeon for another discussion - It's likely they will remove the tumour and upper lobe of her lung. They are 85 % sure it's Lung Cancer and there is also a suspicious Lymph node which needs looking at. So here's my concern. If it's not in her lymph nodes it's stage 1A and she has a 90 % Plus chance of being fine in 5 years. If it's in her lymph nodes it's Stage 2B and she's 66% of being dead in 5 Years according to the cancer survival rates. Is it as black and white as that ?

  • Hi Xink37

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. It's positive to hear that at the moment the Consultant feels that it is in the early stages.

When looking at statistics it's not always black and white. It's important to remember that everyone responds to treatments differently and your Mum's health prior to this diagnosis may also impact things.

Once she's had her operation the Consultant will be better placed to talk to you about treatment options and what that may mean for Mum. However, if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses in the meantime, I'm sure that they will be able to give you some more general information that might answer some of your questions. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
