IBD or Bowel Cancer?

Hello all

Im 22 years old and have been having issues with my stomach since February this year. This includes a raise on my abdomen, stitch like pain on the left side of my abdomen, blood in stool, mucus in stool, back pain, burning sensations and shooting pains in my left arm, regular changes in my bowel movements (diorhea and constipation).I spoke to my doctor about this and she did a very mild inspection on me and felt nothing and it was dismissed. Not long after my symptoms persisted and I was sure that I could feel a raise/mass on my left rib. I spoke to another doctor who recommended I changed my contraceptive pill and see if that helps which it did not. Since then I have been having phone appointments with the odd face to face appointment with my GP trying to convince her that there is something not right. She also examined my abdomen and again felt nothing. As I suffer with anxiety around health and death she put all of my symptoms down to that and came to the conclusion that I had ibs. I was happy to accept this diagnosis if she could confirm it but she couldn't. I then went into a&e and I had abdominal pain and constipation for 4ish days (kind of like a dicky tummy feeling). The doctor in a&e did another examination of my abdomen and felt nothing but recommended that I take a calprotectin test. I took the test and my calprotectin levels were raised(I didn't ask how much by). My Gp contacted me on Friday to let me know that she had referred me to the local hospital for further testing. I was told it could take up to three weeks for the hospital to contact

me but I recieved a text from my Gp saying I had been referred to the digestive diseases department.

As someone who suffers severely with anxiety especially when it comes to illness and death, I am going out of my mind trying to figure out what the likely result will be of these tests. I have spent countless hours searching for symptoms that differentiate ibd from bowel cancer as I'm convinced it's likely to be one of the two. I just have so many unanswered questions and it would really help if someone who has experienced what I could potentially have to go through in the next coming weeks.

1.Are there any symptoms which differentiate the two?

2.What is likely to be the next step when the hospital contact me?

3.how long do these results usually

take to come back?

4.Do symptoms of colon cancer come and go/flare up?

5.If cancer is detected what is the next step?

6.How do I control my anxiety around the whole situation? I am having breakdowns/panic attacks 3/4 times a day. Even during work.

7.if the cancer has spread would that be detected in bloods?

I appreciate that not all these can be answered but any answers would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hiya!

I know we are a couple of months on but I just wanted to find out how you are doing? Did you get your results ? And did you have a colonoscopy?

I'm in a very similar position to what you've described, 25 years old and raised calprotectin with stomach pain. I've finally been referred for a colonoscopy but I'm already so anxious and I've been able to really relate to what you've mentioned, I'm struggling to concentrate on anything but it's been a relief hearing other similar stories!

I really hope everything went well for you! X

  • Hello! I am still waiting for my colonoscopy but I've been given an appointment for it on the 21st of this month.

So I am yet to get any answers. However, although I still have most of my symptoms, many of the more worrying ones like blood in stool and severe pain in stomach has calmed down a lot and I think a lot of that has to do with the fact I've been able to keep calm about the situation and have become a lot less stressed by it so please just try to remain calm because it'll highten everything if you're not. It's easier said than done though. I think it is important to remember that our age gives us a massive advantage with this so just hold out and stay as calm as possible would be my advice.

  • Hey!

Thank you so much for replying, wow it really has been a long wait for you but I'm really pleased some of your worrying symptoms have calmed down!! Hope all goes well on the 21st and I'm sure it will do, bet it will feel like the biggest relief when it's all over.

Thanks a lot for your advice, you're definitely right about stressing making everything feel worse so I'll do my best to stay busy and distracted. Can't really change anything by worrying except making it worse!

    thanks again! X

  • Hi again!

just wanted to check in and see how everything went for you? Really hoping you got the answers you wanted, you've been waiting a long time!!

    x

  • Hey!

Thank you for checking in! Everything went as normal with no complications with the colonoscopy so that was fine! I now have a 6-8 weeks wait for results. I'm not sure why it all takes so long but taking my own advice and staying as calm and rational as I can!

    how have you been managing?x

  • Oh that's really really good news, I'm so pleased there were no complications with the colonoscopy and so reassuring that they didn't pick anything sinister up during it!! But still frustrating that you have another long wait ahead for more results.

ive been okay thanks, also took your advice and trying not to get too anxious so thank you for that, it's definitely helped even though the symptoms are still there I've noticed they're definitely worse when I'm stressing over them.
I've not heard anything back from my referral yet, I think it was only triaged last week so I'm expecting a while to wait. Just wishing I could win the lottery to pay for a private colonoscopy tomorrow haha.

again I'm so pleased for you, I hope this has taken some of the weight off your shoulders! X

  • Aww it's good to hear that my advice has helped a little! Hopefully you won't be waiting too much longer for the referral! x

  • Hi Sha,

I jsut came across your post and it is crazy how similar your symptoms are to mine. I am currently waiting for a colonoscopy but cannot help googling! I was just wondering how your results were and how you are feeling now? Did you get a diagnosis?

  • Hi!

oh I'm so sorry to hear you're having the same symptoms! It's such an awful time when you don't know what's going on. My results all came back clear and my doctor believes I may have IBS. This seems likely as I've since been taking daily probiotics and my symptoms are so much more manageable. I'm rarely in any pain even when I'm eating foods that tend to trigger ibs although i do feel some pain on occasion. I hope this makes you feel a little bit better and I hope all goes well for you!

  • Please don't worry about a Colonoscopy. It's a good test. It doesn't hurt. I was sedated first. I realised it wasnt a big deal. The hospital staff would never want you to feel discomfort or pain so please don't worry,
