Lung cancer diagnosis

Hi all,

My mum had a chest xray done last week, she is a smoker and has COPD.

Her GP called within a few days to say they have found something concerning on the xray, and that she has been referred to the rapid hub for a CT scan.

She had the CT scan this morning, which confirmed a 4cm Mass on her right lung. They have told her she will now have to have a PET scan and biopsy. But they haven't officially diagnosed cancer, is this as good as a diagnosis?

Its all happened so quickly I just don't know what to think.

Is there a possibility a 4cm mass could be something else, I mean on the surface of it it seems that it is likely cancer, but I'm hoping as it hasn't been officially diagnosed yet that there's still a chance its something else.

Thankyou

  • Hey there, I know what you're going through. I went through the same thing. My mum has an x-ray after a bad chest infection which came back as abnormal so they did a CT scan where they said that they suspected cancer.

It was a horrible horrible time. Waiting for results is the worst. We saw a lung consultant who said that from my mum's scan he's pretty sure it's cancer but they had to do a biopsy and PET scan to confirm it.

Whilst you do need a biopsy to confirm cancer, you have to accept that it most likely is. Whilst I hoped that it would be benign, I knew not to get my hopes up.

As hard as a cancer diagnosis is, it gets better. In my mind it was a lot worse. For me I thought, she's got lung cancer, she's going to die. When we saw the doctors they were extremely positive despite the fairly advanced stage (3B). The first consultant said that 10-15 years ago it would have been bad news if my mum was diagnosed with lung cancer but he said that there's been advances in treatment.

My mum's oncology team are aiming to cure her (I pray to God that they will) and seem confident in treating her. She's also undergoing immunotherapy which shows promising results.

Whilst you can't change the diagnosis, you can change the situation and your mindset. There's been so many advances in treating lung cancer and now cancer is no longer an automatic death sentence. Even if cancer can't be cured there are people who can live with it for years and treat it like a chronic condition like diabetes or MS. There are also so many treatment options out there.

It was a shocking diagnosis especially for my mum but she's bounced back and not letting the cancer defeat her. She's doing well and touchwood will continue getting better and beat the cancer. I hope the same for your mum if the diagnosis is cancer.

Wishing you and your mum all the best. X
