Colposcopy

Hi all.

I'm looking for some reassurances. I recently contacted my GP due to irregular bleeding/spotting. I wasn't tracking the the spotting so I can't say how frequent it was, I have the nexplanon implant which had made normal menstrual cycles non existent for me.  But in the last 6 weeks I've bled between 2-5 days every 10-12 days. The bleeding is fairly light but quite dark and sticky, more like clots than a proper blood flow. I started going out with someone in November last year and he's only my second sexual partner. Recently sex can be painful and sometimes the bleeding has coincided with not long after intercourse. I don't have any unusual or smelly discharge. When I contacted the GP they advised smear (as it was due February) and swabs. Swabs and urine all came back clear. But Yesterday morning I received a letter telling me I need a colposcopy, last night I didn't sleep at all and felt awful all day today. I'm so anxious that I have the dreaded C!! Any thoughts on my symptoms or am I just reading into things too much. Many thanks in advance.

  • Hi Hlcorn

Try not to overthink this or worry too much. The colposcopy is a check to get a better look at your cervix and by no means at all signifies you might have cancer! It’s just a routine part of examinations and investigations for gynaecological issues such as unexplained bleeding. Think of it as ruling out stuff rather than ruling it in! Your symptoms could be caused by lots of things, not only cancer, which would be the worst case scenario. There’s honestly no point in thinking the worst at this point because hopefully it will never happen. I hope you get your appointment soon and get answers.
