dimple in breast

hi everyone,

for a while now i have noticed a dimple on my left breast just under the nipple. i ignored it at first, hoping that it would go away, but it hasn't. i also occasionlly get pains in this breast, but i've always ignored that too and assumed its due to period pains. i've only just turned 20 years old, but with a family history of breast cancer and abnormally large breasts (G cup) i'm very worried that something is wrong. i'm just about to enter my last year of university and i'm currently living away from home so this really isn't ideal that i'm going through this now. after speaking with my boyfriend and mum i've agreed that i need to get it checked, so now i'm waiting until the week starts so i can phone my local GP and ask for a phone consultation.

with the coronavirus still having a strong impact, i was wondering how examinations and appointments go - do you get booked in for a mammogram just by having a phone consultation and explaining your symptoms, or will i need to have an in-person appointment too?

as a sidenote, i have always always always hated my breasts. developing big breasts at a young age was awful, and made even worse due to the fact that i'm only 5 foot tall! i've wanted a breast reduction since i was 13, which sounds dramatic but is true. if it did turn out that i do have breast cancer and need a mastectomy, how likely would it be that the surgeons would willingly allow me to get a double mastectomy without reconstruction? I've heard that some surgeons are reluctant to do this if no problems are detected in the other breast seeing as it is technically removing a healthy body part, but i hate my body so much i truly believe that it would make me so much happier rather than having a single mastectomy and reconstruction. would it even be possible to reconstruct a breast to match a G cup?! has anyone else gone through something similar?

i'd really appreciate any advice from anyone who is also going through something similar during this crazy virus, i'm so scared and really don't know what to do. i really don't want to have to drop out of uni if there is something seriously wrong, especially as i've already signed onto a rented house and will lose out on a lot of money

thank you all so much for reading and i hope everyone is doing well Xxx

  • Hi Lauren!

Thought I'd share my experience. I am 27 and 4 weeks ago noticed a dimple in my right breast below my nipple. Got seen in person the next day by GP who did an examination and referred me to the breast clinic. After 3 weeks I got my appointment through, and it is tomorrow. My GP advised I will be there most of the day and to bring my lunch etc with me. Nobody is allowed in with me, only to pick me up/drop me off.

Since I have been to the GP I have went on to have a little discharge from both nipples. I'm hoping it is unrelated, and due to being a newish mum (daughter is 1.5 years old) but will keep you updated on my appointment tomorrow. I'm not sure about the double mastectomy etc. All I can say is try not to worry too much about the small stuff! Take one day at a time and keep yourself busy, although I know that's easier said than done. It is so scary. I was panic stricken when I went on to have discharge. Dont worry about uni etc at the moment, see what your GP says and take it from there. Remember also your health comes first above everything. Boobs are weird so it could very well be some issue with fat or something, I too have quite large boobs like yourself. Be brave and we can do this and get to the bottom of it!

Would love to know how you get on.

  • Hi Amber

Thanks so much for your comment, it really helped. I've also been referred to the breast clinic next week and have also been told that i should expect to be there for a few hours. What tests did you have done and how did it go? I really hope everything is good with you, i'd love an update on your situation. i'm quite scared about having to go in my myself which might sound like a silly worry, how was it for you?

  • Hi Lauren I hope you are well. It's a scary wait, isnt it? So long story short, I got no tests...only an examination. One by a nurse, followed by the doctor before announcing she wasnt concerned. I left feeling a bit...I dont know...I was relieved. But I was wondering if I had been dismissed due to age maybe? I'm trying to trust the doctor that all is well and I've had no further problems with my breasts. Got told to come back if things worsened. I would say I was there only about an hour!

She reckons the cause is that our breasts can go through phases of being normal then less firm then back to normal through our life, but dont always do it at the same time?

Going in yourself is a bit scary but the staff will be absolutely lovely and explain everything. Dont forget your mask! I'm wishing you all the best for your appointment, sorry that I cant give any further advice! Please let us know how you get on. And please dont worry if they go ahead and do tests and your experience isnt like mine, every breast clinic will operate a bit differently!

  • Hi there! Nothing further ever came of this (thankfully) and to this day I still notice the  dimpling now and again! I now have a 2nd child who is 1 and I am currently breastfeeding so there are lots of changes. I still try to keep an eye on things and try do monthly checks. Have you been to GP etc yet? x

  • Thanks for your reply! I have been to GP who isn’t too concerned and could barely see it tbh but it’s under my boob on the inner part and you have to have the right lighting to see! My breast clinic appr is tomorrow morning and I am so scared! X
