Throat Cancer

Hi unfortunately I am new to this forum. Approxiamtely six weeks ago I developed lumps on the right hand side of my neck. I went to the GP and was refered for an ultrasound. As a result of the ultrasound I was sent to ENT for a biopsy as I had two masses in my neck. I was seen within less than two weeks. I saw the ENT consultant on monday who sent me for a CT Scan yesterday and I have to have an MRI. I asked him the rationale behind why all the tests were being done and he said that due to my age (52) and the proximity of the lumps he needed to see whether I have cancer. He then asked me to return on saturday (25th July) for a camera down my throat. I received a call on weds evening asking me to go and see the consultant yesterday morning where he put the camera down my throat. He expained that he has found a lump below my tonsils and just above my voice box. So has anybody experienced the same as me and what was the outcome. I have accepted that it may be cancer and I believe the treatment for it is very good.

  • Hi Bresh

I'm in a similar situation to you

I have had an MRI that has shown two areas in my throat and a lymph node

I'm 46 and have been having throat issues for 8 months but in the end I had to pay privately. The scope didn't reveal anything but Professor said he'd request a routine MRI to put my mind at rest but didn't get the appointment til 11 th July

A week later I had a call from my dr to tell me the results

Are the masses in your throat on the same side ?

I am waiting to see an ENT again on Monday ( 2 week wait )

I'm a bit all over the place emotionally but I'm hoping for the best

If you would like to chat please feel free

    Hugs

  • Not a medic but I know that lumps in the neck should be checked quickly, because if it is cancer then time is of the essence to maximize chances of a succesful treatment and full recovery. And they are checking you out quickly, which is great.

I expect searching for 'throat', 'oral' or similar on this site will point you to similar stories. But remember you haven't been formally diagnosed yet. I expect a series of further tests will be carried out before a diagnosis is made, but as I said before I am not a medic. Here's hoping that it turns out to be the best news possible.

  • Hi Rachel

Thanks for the response. Both lumps are on the same side. The camera revealed a lump that the doctor suspects is cancer but waiting for the biopsy, CT scan results and to have the MRI. I was shocked at how quickly I was dealt with to be honest. I haven't told my wife that the camera revealed a lump or my daughter as we have just become grandparents for the first time this week so as you can imagine emotions are all over the place.

I have resigned myself to the fact it will probably be cancer and will hopefully deal with it though it's a fright prospect.

    Take Care

  • Thanks for replying I have to see the consultant on Tuesday for the results so am nervous but am gearing myself up for the worse.

  • Hi Paul

    Thanks for replying also

How bizarre that you've become grandparents! Massive congratulations!
Our eldest daughter is being induced on Sunday as she's 9 days overdue

The excitement of becoming a Nanna for the first time is tinged with all this worry.

Paul , it's good that they have got the wheels in motion and you're being given all the tests so promptly.

You're doing so well , I'm a bit emotional and it's hard to keep positive at the moment but I try to occupy myself.

I'm currently on a bike ride as I'm driving myself bonkers at home .

I'm happy to chat if it helps as we seem to both be in the same boat ( I don't want to stress my husband out as he doesn't deal with emotions too well) but he tries to understand

I hope your day is going okay and you're managing to try and keep positivity flowing
