Awaiting biopsy results for possible Subungual Melanoma

Hi I am new here so this is my first post.

I had a biopsy done on my nail bed on 2nd July and currently waiting on the results. I am really worried. I had a long black line on my thumb nail for almost 2 years and never bothered about it as I always just painted my nails thinking nothing of it ‍♀️. In April I contacted my GP as I had some pain in my thumb. I explained about the black line & how the pigmentation around the line had changed colour so she asked if I had ever had any other skin cancers   . She did an urgent referral to dermatology who again did a referral to plastic surgery. I had my thumb nail completely removed and a biopsy done on the nail bed. Has anyone else had this done as I have read SM is a rare cancer so I'm just wondering how others results have been?

I am worried sick about the results but don't want to burden my husband, family or friends with how I'm feeling.

Any advice, words of wisdom greatly appreciated and thank you for reading this...

  • Hi,

SM is quite rare - only 1% of melanoma in white Caucasians is caused by SM. However, there are a few posts on this forum from others who have had the same problem (I have superficial spreading melanoma of the skin). If you search Subungual in the Search Bar at the top of the page you will find those posts.

Hopefully your results will come back clear. If not, there is lots of help & support to help you on this forum and in other places. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • Hi Angie,

Thank you for your reply. I will have a search for others who have been through the same as me. It's all very daunting to try take in and the waiting doesn't help.

    Thank you again x
