Can the Doctor be wrong?

Hi everyone,

I had my appointment at the breast clinic today and I'm not sure if it's made me feel better or worse. I'm 19 and have had symptoms of IBC for the last month (rash, itchiness, flat nipple) so was referred to clinic. At the appointment he examined the breast and was pretty adamant that nothing was wrong from the get go. He said the rash could of been an infection and he said the nipple looked normal to him (it has definitely changed). He also said that due to my age it would be extremely rare for it to be anything sinister. I thought that hearing this would put my mind at rest but I am now scared he is wrong since there was no actual tests carried out. I was really hoping to get a biopsy but I was told it wasn't needed. I feel like I have been totally dismissed due to my age. Am I being paranoid?

    Hi Tegan,

Sadly, this is a problem that many young people have. It is difficult to persuade your GP to pay much attention to you, when you are so young. If you feel something important is happening, don't hesitate to go back to the breast clinic and insist on getting it checked out. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx

  • I was told same at 30.  They were actually right, I was fine,  but I don't think that they could have been sure and should have taken me more seriously.  They didn't ask about family history or anything.  I have learned a little late in the day that you  should look after yourself and not be fobbed off x

  • I went to the walk in centre with a lump in my right testicle and the doctor was positive it was nothing to worry about. I wasn't convinced and paid £100 for a private ultrasound which confirmed there was something there, my actual doctor referred me to the hospital and had the testicle removed a few weeks later, it was cancer and I'm glad I got the second opinion

  • Thankyou for all your replies. I think I am going to ask a second opinion just to be on the safe side. I have woken up today and feel as though the lymph node in my neck is swollen too. I really do think that if someone older had gone in with my symptoms, they would have been tested  :( X

  • Hi Tegan,

    I hope you're doing okay!

It can be particularly scary the first time you notice something like this, no matter what age you are!

Check out a fantastic charity called CoppaFeel! It's aimed at educating young people about what to look out for and when to get checked out: https://coppafeel.org/

The best thing to do is keep an eye on your symptoms and if you're worried go back to the GP.

    Hope everything is okay!
