Fibroadenoma in your 40's

Hi,

Just wanted to know if anyone has been diagnosed has having a fibroadenoma in their 40's. I've just had my biopsy results and it stated my lump is a fibroadenoma but everything I can find on them says they appear in younger women and I'm 42.

I know I should be really happy but now I'm paronoid that it's wrong

  • That's certainly what I'm hoping, I think you just start reading into every ache and pain, I'm exhausted all the time and doing the slightest thing seems to tire me out but that's probably more down to the not sleeping well than anything else. I can imagine reading the letter would have been terrifying, especially if you weren't expecting to receive it.      x

  • Yes this is me and anything breast related has me panicking my mum first had BC at 50 when I was 16 years old it then came back but her symptoms were put down to other things as it was bone pain and she had it for around 4 years before it was found. By that time it had spread to her brain it was a very traumatic time even though I know its rare this happens. I think that's why I feel the way I do about this diagnosis I think I'd be fine if they said it was a cyst and then drained it x

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum and of course it's understandable that you would be concerned because of that. Because of your family history I would think they would be even more careful about your diagnosis, I know the Dr asked me about any family history of breast cancer, I'm sure you would have been the same? Anything like what happened with your  mum would be traumatic for you, both my parents died of lung cancer, both heavy smokers, I've never smoked because I remember losing my dad at 8 years old, my mum died when I was 28 and it was really traumatic, even now. And, probably like you I'm thinking is it in my genes? But I'm still confident that your diagnosis will be right, there's so much research now that I would be very confident in what dr/consultant says.       x

  • Yes I know what you mean. I will speak to the nurse tomorrow about my worries. I think I'm going to ask my GP to test me for estrogen dominance. That's what's drives these things and I think that's why they say they usually appear in younger women.  Looking at the symptoms I tick every box! I had so many hormonal problems after the birth of each of my girls which made me  quite ill so know how they can mess your body up x

  • That definitely sounds like good idea, once you know you've had all the relevant tests done you'll feel more in control and I think that's the most important thing. I'm sleeping on my feet so off to bed hopefully for a decent sleep. Hope you get a great night's sleep tonight. Positive thoughts.       x

  • Hi Kelbelash,

How are you doing? Had my biopsy results back today, biopsy was benign, consultant was still concerned about ultrasound which they did on 16 July so she's sending me for a vacuum assisted biopsy which may take several weeks, they need to remove and test more tissue. She thinks it could be a papilloma which I've never heard of. I'm so relieved biopsy was benign but still feel I'm in limbo as they're still looking for something and also said they wouldn't biopsy lymph node under my arm which I can't understand. Hope you are doing ok and managed to get some answers to your questions from Dr.

  • Hi,

Glad its come back as benign are they still concerned about it or is it another area they are unsure of?

I would also have thought they would have tested your lymph node too. It is good that they are getting to the bottom of it for you.

I'm waiting for a blood test now. I got my letter discharging me from the clinic. I'm so glad it's a fibroadenoma but I'm still having problems with the pain. When my period is due the breast tissue under my arm swells which in turn presses on the fibroadenoma and its painful. My whole armpit swells up and I can't close my arm down.

I can only wear the crop top type bras now as any underwire just pokes right into the fibroadenoma. I guess I'm just going to have to put up with it like this.

  • Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that you're still in pain with it, can they do anything else for you or is it something that will ease in time?  I just couldn't really understand what Dr was saying yesterday, all I got was that she really didn't like what ultrasound was showing and whatever is in breast she wants taken out completely, hence the reason for the vacuum assisted biopsy.  When she was writing her notes I specifically saw her writing mastectomy and grade 3, if everything was benign why would she be writing this?  I'm very confused, feel like I should be celebrating a benign result but this is still hanging over me.  And she said radiologist who was in the meeting said it wasn't necessary to biopsy lymph node but I'm asking about that again when I go for other biopsy.  Hope you get your apoointment soon for your blood test.
