Fibroadenoma in your 40's

Hi,

Just wanted to know if anyone has been diagnosed has having a fibroadenoma in their 40's. I've just had my biopsy results and it stated my lump is a fibroadenoma but everything I can find on them says they appear in younger women and I'm 42.

I know I should be really happy but now I'm paronoid that it's wrong

  • So pleased your diagnosis is this!!!  I am hoping mine is too, I am 41 and like you thought it was only younger women that got them but I have read that although more common in younger women you can get one at any age.

You'll be doubting it probably because you have prepared yourself so much for bad news.

Can I ask what yours felt like please?

    So pleased for you.

  • Thank you, I'm sure this is the case. I didn't even think about it being a fibroadenoma even after hours on Google! I was thinking it may have been some kind of cyst if not Cancer but this was never on my radar because of my age. I know I should be happy but my mums cancer was missed when it reacurred and by the time it was diagnosed it was too late.

It feels oval but looked round on the ultrasound. I didn't think it moved but the consultant said it was movable and he was able to hold it. It measured 1.8 cm on the ultrasound too. It feels firm but not hard. I think the pain was coming from it pressing on tissue in my armpit. It's sore now but the BC nurse said that will be from the internal trauma from the core biopsy.

  • Bless you so awful after what you have been through with your mam. Have they offered to remove it for you? Hopefully if they do then your mind will settle.

Might be worth following up. Xx

  • I'm so happy for you that this has been your diagnosis, I know you're still worried but I'm sure dr's and consultant would be very sure before giving you this diagnosis. Could you maybe discuss your concerns with them and get them to go through it all with you?  I'm still in limbo until the 29th July before I get my biopsy results, really can't come quick enough, the waiting is becoming unbearable. Try and relax and let your mind rest a wee while, I'm sure it'll all be fine.   x

  • Thank you. Yes I'm going to ring the Doctor tomorrow to talk about it. Was just in shock when they told me as I was expecting bad news. I know I've had everything tested so they must be sure I think it's so had to stop worrying even after the fact.

Let me know how you get on. I'm staying at on the site as hopefully I can be helpful to other people in the future x

  • I can understand that completely, we have to prepare ourselves so much for the bad news that it comes as a shock when it isn't! I would be exactly the same as you right now but I think if your Dr can reassure you it'll be a huge weight off your mind. I'm just going between thinking I can't possibly have cancer, I'm too healthy (crazy I know) to remembering Dr telling me to prepare myself for bad news. No wonder our heads are all over the place...will definitely keep you updated when I get my results. Hopefully you can get a good night's sleep tonight.      x

  • I've just read out conversation on the other post. Have you had a letter from the consultant that was also sent to your GP. I got one yesterday and it said what they had found/seen but obviously not the results. It described my lump. X

  • No I haven't had any letter like that at all but I'm so glad you've mentioned it because I would probably have freaked out if I got something like that out of the blue. I was bad enough when I got the letter confirming 2nd appointment because it had the consultant's name rather than the doctor! Was it all medical jargon in the letter?    x

  • I literally stopped breathing when my husband picked me up and my daughter said Mum you have a letter from the boob doctor (she's 10).

Yes it was all medical and made me panic more as the ultrasound tech said she initially thought it was a cyst and this basically said it wasn't.

My  2 GP's said it was a lymph node too so I think the only thing that can 100% confirm anything is the biopsy. I have seen others say they were told to prepare for the worst and it turned out bengin on some of these threads.

  • Hi,

No the BC nurse said to just leave it. I said it's painful but apparently this is from the biopsy. I'm a bit concerned as I went to the doctors originally because it had got painful so I'm hoping I'm not going to be in pain forever with it. I think if they get too big they remove them but she said it may just shrink on its own x
