Hysteroscopy

I've had constant bleeding for nearly 3 months and had an internal scan which showed the lining of the womb is thick so they want to do a biopsy. Been on HRT since September last year. Because of Covid 19 (apparently) it won't be under sedation and as I'm tender and cramping lots, this terrifies me. I'm trying to go private as can use my husbands insurance through his work. Has had anyone had a biopsy without sedation and is it as painful as my anxious mind is telling me it will be? The doctor did say they're usually carried out whilst sedated which suggests it's not pleasant!

  • I had a pipelle biopsy which did not hurt at all. I was supposed to have a hysteroscopy (pre-Covid) - and was not given sedation - but the doctor had a problem accessing my womb (doctor said she had never experienced this problem with a patient before!) which is why they did a pipelle biopsy instead. Like you my womb was very thick and I was bleeding at the time. Don't worry. If it becomes painful just tell them and they can stop and change procedure or give you sedation at that point. My procedure was switched from what was intended as it was being carried out. I thought it might be helpful for you to know this. Try and relax when they are doing the procedure. Hard I know. But it will help and lessen any chance of you experiencing pain. Good luck xx

  • Thank you, that's really helpful to know. Were your test results ok after the biopsy and did you have any treatments to stop the bleeding? It's so draining bleeding all the time and having to be conscious of leaks and mishaps! At 54 I never thought I'd still be buying sanitary towels in bulk...!! xx

  • Hi - I can totally emphasise as I was a similar age to you when heavy bleeding started.

The good news: my biopsy was completely normal and my CA125 low – not sure blood test was essential but doctor was feeling sorry for me given my hysteroscopy hadn't worked and agreed to my request. I had bloods done same day. (Turned out I was anaemic - not surprising given the bleeding - so got prescribed iron tablets.)

I was subsequently offered an endometrial ablation but was told it was not essential more a lifestyle choice. Consultant was very clear that I did not have cancer. Ultimately, I chose to wait it all out (little knowing it would be a longer wait than I imagined...now nearer sixty than fifty).  Finally the bleeds are improving and I think I am close to stopping at long last - longer gaps between periods.

I got an open discharge in case I changed my mind about the ablation.

And yes, buying sanitary towels in bulk is a complete pain. Expensive too. I really really sympathise with you! xx
