So today I rang my GP about a lump I have in my left breast, over the last week and a half it has grown rapidly along with sensitive nipples and my breast getting bigger. The GP had me in for a check not even two hours later which was great. She asked about my family history and I told her both my great nan and nan on my mother’s side have had breast cancer along with stomach cancer. She checked them out and distinguished that I definitely had a lump straight away. She told me she thought it was probably a cyst or fibroadenoma but referred me to get it checked further in a breast clinic. This was great news as I’d get all the answers I wanted and so I left. She has just rang me back and told me she forgot but is afraid she can’t refer me because I am too young (I am 20) and therefore don’t fit in with the guidelines for a referral and that instead I should monitor it over the next 4 weeks and if it’s still there she can refer me then. I just wanted some other opinions on this because it’s made me feel quite uneasy. I know that it is very rare in younger women but to give me the referral then take it away purely because of my age has stressed me out a bit.
