F2F appmnt moved to phone for biopsy results

Hi everyone. I am a little nervous as I had a biopsy a couple of weeks ago and already had a follow up appointment booked at the hospital as soon as the biopsy was done. This was confirmed by letter and in the report of what they found, specifically noting that my appointment would be face to face to also plan for a polypectomy.

Today I was told that the doctor is busy etc and is moving my appointment to a telephone call tomorrow.

Initially I was relieved as I thought that they would never give me a cancer diagnosis over the phone.

Now I am not so sure. I think I would struggle to be told this kind of news over the phone without being in front of a doctor where I would feel more comfortable in asking questions etc.

Could I be told that I have C over the phone? I'm a little panicked.

  • Hello PantingP,

I had the opposite experience. I was due to get my biopsy result by phone, but at short notice the hospital changed it to an in-person appointment. I wondered if this meant bad news, but the news was simply that they didn't obtain a usable sample from the biopsy, so I would need another one.

The policy on phone vs in-person consultations varies between hospitals, and also amongst different doctors, so don't read too much into it.

I think you can accept the hospital's reasons for the change at face value, and expect that you will receive the same news and consultation over the phone that you would have received in person.

    Good luck!

  • Hello. I'm due for a biopsy tomorrow but got an appointment through the post for October as well. I rang to query the appointment as it would be such a long time after my biopsy , mine was a follow up appointment, they told me that usually results take upto 2 weeks but if they find anything they will ring to speak to me so I'm thinking the same. It would be awful to receive such news over the phone. Is there anyone who could be with you when they call, also maybe good to have some questions written down just incase. I'm sending you good wishes for tomorrow I hope all goes well.  X

  • Thank you both.

Still waiting for the call. An hour late unfortunately, but hopefully soon.
