Wait time for colposcopy

Hi all,

I hope you are all staying safe.

I just wanted to ask if somebody could give me an idea of how long it usually takes to get an appointment after you get thee smear test results? Mine came back last week and the letter says I need a colposcopy. I'm worried because I'm going abroad for a while to see my family (about a month and a half) and I really don't want to miss the appointment so I'm trying to figure out whether to reschedule my flights. I've called my hospital and they weren't able to give me an ETA because of the backlog created by Covid-19, so I wanted to see if any of you are waiting for a colposcopy as well and ask how long you've been waiting or when you got the appointment letter after you got your smear test results?

Thanks so much in advance!

  • Hello ZaC89,

Hopefully you'll have an appointment soon or that you're able to move your flights around. It might be good to contact you doctor to clarify how long to wait might be and if they can put you on a cancelation because of your situation. Feel free to read more about how to get the best out of your appointment here

  • Hi,

I had an abnormal smear test results with some borderline cell changes and high risk HPV positive. My appointment letter for a colposcopy came through at the same time as my results(one week after my swear test appointment at doctors). Apparently the hospital tried to contact me due to a short notice, luckily I've received my appointment letter in time for my appointment at the hospital. It's been three weeks since I've had a colposcopy, still waiting for my biopsy results.

I'm sure your appointment letter will come through shortly. Try not to worry xx

  • Hi Anastasia,

Many thanks for getting back to me. I manged to talk to my hospital and the backlog created by Covid-19 means they are not doing colposcopies for low-grade cases like mine at the moment. The "good" thing is this means I won't be missing my appointment while I'm away. I may go to a private doctor though if the wait turn out to be too long.

    Best wishes and thanks again!

  • Hi Anna,

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. Apparently the wait time really depends on your hospital at the moment. I managed to talk to mine and it will take a while since because of the backlog created by the coronavirus and they are prioritising higher-risk results.

Thanks for the nice words and best wishes! Xx

  • Hi,

How long did it take for you to get seen as a lower risk, as i'm sure you must have been seen by now? I've been waiting 13 weeks since my letter came through and i'm getting slightly nervous. This also may sound nuts but I saw a psychic on Saturday and she was concerned about my health and said if I leave something it will cause lots of problems and i'm worried its this. I'm only 25 :(

    Many thanks,

    Katrina x

  • Hi Katrina,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I just wanted to send a reply to say it looks like the user you replied to hasn't been active on the forum in a few years. Hopefully you'll still receive a reply, but if not you can always create your own new discussion on the forum if you would like to.

I hope you hear more soon - you can of course give your doctor or the hospital a call to chase it up if you haven't heard anything.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
