What to do when panic stops you seeing a doctor

Hi everyone

I have a fear of going to the doctors and feel very uncomfortable when being examined. Even just thinking about booking an appointment brings on an irrational uncontrollable reaction that can only be categorised as a panic attack.

Since 2003 I have seen a doctor once and became upset in the surgery, it was embarassing for me and the doctor and other staff seemed uncomfortable. I think they thought i was a bit odd!

Anyway, I have a mole I know I need to get checked and I also haven't had a smear test since 2003 as I just can't bear the thought of a stranger touching me intimately. I know it is ridiculous, but I just can't seem to find a way over it.

Even talking face to face about this issue is upsetting for some reason.

Any advice on what I should do?

Thanks for your time.

  • Hi Teebee, this is very sad as your health is being neglected but people have irrational fears about all sorts things, so it's up to you to be proactive in being seen.  Perhaps call the surgery, explain your fears and ask advice.  Maybe a nurse or friend could be with you, someone you trust.  Or ask to have some cognitive behaviour therapy, your concerns are very real to you, but obviously you know it needs sorting out.  So call the surgery and discuss your fears and take a step in the right direction.  Best wishes, Carol x
