Anxiously awaiting biopsy results!

Hoping someone can ease my worries a little as I am going out of my mind. I'm 31 and have two young girls and just keep breaking down.

I had a skin excision biopsy 3 weeks ago for suspected MM but I wasn't given much information, if anything I wasn't that worried as the dr who looked at it initially said it looked fine but because I was worried he referred me. Well when I went to the dermatologist he just looked at it and said it was coming out.

Fast forward to now and I'm waiting for the results, which on the leaflet said it would be 2-3 weeks. But when I called to see if it was close they said it's been sent for a second opinion. Well now I've heard that I just keep thinking the worse and now I have to wait longer.

has anyone had their skin biopsy sent for a second opinion but it been negative? Or at least not so bad. I think I can handle melanoma in situ, but just fearing stage 4.

thank you in advance.

  • Hi,

I can understand your anxiety but please don't read too much into this. I know several people who have had a biopsy go to another hospital histology department - it's because either not enough tissue was taken or it's not obvious if the cells in the tissue are cancer cells. In these cases they will be sent to a hospital that are more experienced in dealing with this problem & they can give a definitive answer. In one case I know, it was sent to two hospitals - the last one being in Holland because it was so difficult! In the end, those that couldn't be definitely pinned down were treated as though they were cancerous to be on the safe side. So it will take another two or three weeks before you hear anything I'm afraid.

Please don't stress that, if mm, it's late stage. If it was late stage you would know about it by now as you would be presenting with a more serious symptom(s). There is still a chance it's not cancerous - if it is cancerous it's much more likely to be early stage so please don't panic. Just find a way to get through the next couple of weeks by distracting yourself with work and your family.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)
