Nipple Discharge

Hi, I'm 26 years old and have experienced discharge from one nipple on and off for about 2 years. I first went to the doctors and was given antibiotics which did help for a period of time however within the past few weeks the nipple discharge is now blood. I went to the doctors 2 weeks ago and was advised I would be referred to a clinic for further assessment. Has anyone else experienced a bleeding nipple?
Also, I've not had my appointment letter yet and I feel so anxious and worried. How long is the usual wait for an appointment letter?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Stxoxo,

Welcome to Cancer Chat! You did the right thing to go to the doctor's to get this nipple discharge looked at and I hope you won't need to wait too long to be seen at the clinic for this further assessment. Hopefully you will meet others here who have had similar symptoms and they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

It might be a good idea to give them a call if you are worried about the appointment letter and chase it with them - they will be able to tell you more about it and give you an estimate as to how long you might have to wait.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello I am very sorry to hear that. It is sickening even to think about it.

I had a discharge which I didn't pay much attention to. My son was about one, so I thought it was remains of lactation.

Then I noticed bloody stains on the bra. We were on a cruise at the time  - too far from any medical advise. I can totally relate to your worries. I also started to feel a small lump on the side of nipple.

Upon returning home, they referred me to breast clinic very quickly, and there they found papilloma - a benign growth inside the milk chanel. It became too large and started to break blood vessels, hence bleeding.

They took it out a month later and 10 years on its still good, touch wood.

On the other hand my friend had bloody discharge from the nipple and they found cancer. Luckily it was in capsule still so they just got it out without any other scary treatments.

The fact that antibiotics helped you in the past, probably keeps your gp relaxed. They are usually very quick with referring to breast specialists - quick meaning a couple of days at the most, if they think it's something bad.

Keep nagging them and demand to be seen. Wishing you the best of luck and good health.

I hope all goes well for you. You are young, nit unlikely to be something dodgy.
