Suspected Melanoma

Hi all, hope your all well

Looking for some support or guidance please.
I've always had a beauty spot/ mole on the back of my leg on my calf. Few months ago I noticed it was getting quite big! Recently I noticed it was scabby! And just weird looking after being perfectly round and small.

anyway on 6th July I called my doctor and he asked me for some photos. After seeing the photos he referred me straight away to a specialist on a two week priority appointment (NHS).i recieved a call the next day from the specialist and had also seen the photos. They asked me questions and then told me they will remove it to be on the safe side but due to Covid and no hospital appointments they can check it!and they can't confirm when a hospital appointment will be available.
In the meantime I thought I would go private just to get it checked by a dermatologist! I managed to get a appointment on 10th July and she checked all my body and the mole in question and said that she thinks it's melanoma! She was quite surprised as I'm of Pakistan origin! I said to her that what percentage is it that it's not melanoma and she said it's highly likely that it is rather then it isn't! I didn't know what to think at that point I was wearing a face mask and I was literally dripping with sweat and confused and scared to say the least!
she advised me that it's better to get it removed on the NHS as if I need further treatment I will already be in there system! But I should get it removed in the next 14 days!
I then began calling the appointment line daily and managed to get a appointment on 23rd July and got it removed! I'm currently now waiting for my biopsy results!
has anyone been through something similar???
if the dermatologist has told me she thinks it's highly likely it is melanoma then has anyone had Experiance that what they where told it did actually turn out to be that?
I'm in week 2 now of waiting for results! They told me 2-3 weeks!
is it the case that the longer I wait it actually means it is something?

thank you in advance for any advice.

  • Hi sally,

yes had my appointment and stage 1 melanoma. I have another operation within a week!

im a bit shocked at the moment!

  • Hi Angie,

sorry I didn't see your response up until now! So your waiting again now?

I was diagnosed today with stage 1 melanoma

I have a operation again in a week.
    such a horrible time

  • Sorry if I confused you by jumping on this thread! Angie gave me advice a few months ago.

I was just giving an update on how my results had been relayed this time around.

Hearing you have a stage 1 melanoma will be a shock plus needing the WLE but they have caught things early.

Good you are getting your second op so quickly. Good luck with it all! Do be kind to yourself. Lots of TLC and rest. Take care.

  • Hi Sabz,

I'm sorry that it's melanoma but Stage 1 is the very best of a bad bunch. The Wide Local Excision is just to ensure that they've 'mopped up' any stray cells in the surrounding tissue and then you will be monitored with regular check ups for a time.

I know you will still be in shock & it will take a while to sink in but you are in good hands & have a huge chance of never having any further problem. If I can be of any help with anything, I've sent you a friend request so that we can chat by private message. Good luck next week,

    Angie x

  • Hi Sunny,

That's rotten news - just when you thought everything was OK and now it's back on the rollercoaster again. I hope your appointment goes OK and they don't find anything is suspicious. Fingers crossed for you,
