Suspected Melanoma

Hi all, hope your all well

Looking for some support or guidance please.
I've always had a beauty spot/ mole on the back of my leg on my calf. Few months ago I noticed it was getting quite big! Recently I noticed it was scabby! And just weird looking after being perfectly round and small.

anyway on 6th July I called my doctor and he asked me for some photos. After seeing the photos he referred me straight away to a specialist on a two week priority appointment (NHS).i recieved a call the next day from the specialist and had also seen the photos. They asked me questions and then told me they will remove it to be on the safe side but due to Covid and no hospital appointments they can check it!and they can't confirm when a hospital appointment will be available.
In the meantime I thought I would go private just to get it checked by a dermatologist! I managed to get a appointment on 10th July and she checked all my body and the mole in question and said that she thinks it's melanoma! She was quite surprised as I'm of Pakistan origin! I said to her that what percentage is it that it's not melanoma and she said it's highly likely that it is rather then it isn't! I didn't know what to think at that point I was wearing a face mask and I was literally dripping with sweat and confused and scared to say the least!
she advised me that it's better to get it removed on the NHS as if I need further treatment I will already be in there system! But I should get it removed in the next 14 days!
I then began calling the appointment line daily and managed to get a appointment on 23rd July and got it removed! I'm currently now waiting for my biopsy results!
has anyone been through something similar???
if the dermatologist has told me she thinks it's highly likely it is melanoma then has anyone had Experiance that what they where told it did actually turn out to be that?
I'm in week 2 now of waiting for results! They told me 2-3 weeks!
is it the case that the longer I wait it actually means it is something?

thank you in advance for any advice.

  • Hi Sally,

The itching is due to the wound healing. It will settle down in the next few days. Do you have a dressing on it? If so, wrap a bag of frozen veg in a tea towel and place it over the dressing - the cold may help damp the itch down for a while.

I would show the consultant the lumps when you return for your results as, dependant on the results, it may give them an idea as to what is causing the lumps.

    xx

  • Hi Angie,

thank you for your reassuring words. I recieved a call from the secretary today asking me to come for  appointment next Tuesday on the 14th. So I'm now really worried. Surely if it was good news they can discharge and and save the appointment for someone who actually needs it.

im just hoping and praying it's nothing serious.

  • Hi Lozzie

i have an appointment next Tuesday ..... worried is a understatement! Did you hear back?

  • Hi sally,

I have an appointment next Tuesday. Did you hear anything back?

  • Hi all,

Sabz it's good that you have an appointment and from what I can gather from this fab forum is that the consultant seems to want to see you either way as they like to check the wound so try and not go down the path of worrying just yet. I know it's so much easier said than done. Did you try and get some kind of outcome out the Secretary? I'm still waiting just tried to call when I saw that you were getting somewhere but no answer :(

Angie thanks for your brill advice :) and Sally hope your recovering well and that you get a positive result soon

I  am going ever so slightly mad with it all!

  • Hi I was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma on top of my arm in June 2018, I was similar I was sent to hospital I expected them just to look at it , but they removed the thing there and then , it was sent of for a biopsy to confirm what it was it did come back as malignant melanoma. I was in theatre within 3 weeks to have a WLI where the surgeon makes a further incision & because mine was a certain size I was offered lymph node to be checked too at the same time. Thankfully there was no signs that it had spread any further. I now have regular 12 weekly face to face skin checks however my last 2 since  Covid has started have been only phone consultations

I just want to reassure you they team will look after you ask all the questions you need to.
A lot of lesions dont come back with Malignant Melanoma which is a good thing

I was unlucky I have never sunbathed, never been abroad ,never used sun beds etc and never smoked or drink, sometimes it can just be genetics I was told

Good luck with your results hope they come back with good news for you

  • Hi Sabz555

I don't expect to hear anything until sometime next week at the earliest.

Please let me know how you get on at your appointment. I hope you are feeling ok about it.

  • Good news & bad news is usually given face to face so don't read anything into it. Even if the result is negative they may wish to check the biopsy surgery site for healing. Also, there is a third option with regards to results. Some patients are found to have a dysplastic (atypical) mole. This type of mole is benign but has the ability to turn cancerous in the future if it's not removed. They tend to look dodgy and that is why they remove them! They like to monitor patients with dysplastic moles as they usually have a lot of moles on their body. So on these occasions they will check the surgery site & the other moles on the body.

Good luck, hopefully it will be the all clear

  • Hi Sabz555

Have you been to your appointment yet today? How did you get on?

  • Hi Angie,

Just wanted to say I got my results (dysplasia) from GP not the hospital. Hospital were very clear not to call them (COVID changes). Unfortunately scar is repigmenting and I also have new changes to others moles. So I'm back in the fast-stream with another urgent appointment in a couple of weeks.  I didn't expect to be riding the rollercoaster again so soon. I found it hard managing my wound last time as it was out of reach and I couldn't see it except with the help of two mirrors.

I don't know how I'll wear a mask at the hospital. Will try and make something cool - maybe using a piece of silk. Can have a proper mask handy as well just in case.
