Breast clinic referral

Hi

I have an appointment on 14th July to get my breast checked I am really struggling I can't get it out of my head that I am going to get the worst news possible I am so anxious I can't eat I feel ill and am constantly checking for changes to my breast I feel like I want to scream like I am going mad would be nice to hear from people feeling like I do knowing I'm not alone x

  • Well i suppose if the pain isny as bad atleast you can distract easier.

I am dreading goimg in alone. And also dreading the unknown. X

  • They were really nice in the Breast clinic here. I think if it's your first time you see the consultant first then have any tests. There is a bit of waiting around. I saw the consultant then waited about 30 mins to go for the mammogram then about another 30 mins waiting for ultrasound. I then had to wait to go back in to consultant.

You may not need all the tests though fingers crossed

  • I've been to the clinic before for a previous lump, but i knew it was nothing.

Think i'm too young for a mammogram, well thats what they said 3 years ago but my boobs have probably changed since then. Just checked my letter and i'm not going to the breast clinic this time, booked in to general surgery unit. Hospital are probably doing this a bit different because of covid.

Enjoying a cheesy film in bed. X

  • Will be good to get some answers though, hopefully it wont feel like a long week for you. X

  • Yes I think they only give them to you over 40. I was 42 a few weeks ago so this was my first. I have been to the clinic when I was 30 to get checked but I can't remember why now!

I will be thinking about you tomorrow. Hope it all goes OK and let us know. I've offered to go into work again this week to keep busy x

  • Hi, I was referred last Monday. I'm 56 and discovered the fairly large lump on Sunday evening. No family history of breast cancer or previous problems, but I am prone to cysts and abscesses. It wasn't painful last week, but over the last 2 days it's started "putting" and is tender, plus it seems to have moved lower down, closer to my nipple.

I've just spoken to the hospital and the appointement wait for urgent referrals is about 4 weeks.

The target is 2 weeks so I called our regional referral hospital 20 miles away and their wait is around 2 weeks so I've called the surgery and asked them to add Newcastle to the choices.

Disappointed that there was no information given to me by GP surgery re what to expect at the clinic or how long the wait times were.

If you look at the NICE guidelines for breast care it's quite interesting that they don't seem to bear much resemblance to what happens in clinical practice.

  • Hi,

I think it must depend on the area you are in. I went to the doctors on the 8th July got my appointment letter on the 10th of July and my appointment was the 15th. Just waiting now for my biopsy results on Thursday.

My doctor did not tell me what to expect just that they could take a biopsy if needed. All other information came in the letter.

  • Hi, my appointment went well, all clear. The nurse found a significany lump which turned out to just be breast tissue. Apparently my left breast is very lumpy so will need regular gp checks just to make sure all is well as it will be hard for myself to tell. The dimples are just caused by the ligaments changing in my breast.

The pain wasnt actually explained so i will probably phone my gp to ask.

I went in with a sure feeling somethinh was wromg, that when i found it it was ok i still felt uneasy. Its a weird feeling, its took me all day to shake it off and relax.

I really hope your results on thursday are good, bit if they are not then you have so much support. I will check back thursday, please let us know how it goes. X

  • Hi, yes it obviously does. The same old postcode lottery. Our acute trust covers a very large area and much of it is rural. We only have 2 acute hospitals now and some out of hours problems eg acute stroke are only seen at one hospital. For some people that could mean an ambulance journey of almost an hour.

The breast service is based at one of the hospitals, although they do run one clinic a week at one of the other ones.

This lump is getting more sore and tender and larger each day now. It's also hot,so thinking it's maybe an abscess.

It's good that some people are managing to to be seen so quickly.
