Suspected Ovarian Cancer... hemorrhagic cyst

Hello all. I am hoping to get some guidance or experiences of those who have been diagnosed with a cyst to later discover it was ovarian cancer.

I shall try and keep this brief but yesterday I attended

my ultrasound scan after being referred by my doctor after I have been experiencing over the last couple of months symptoms of ovarian cancer or Endometriosis. I have been extremely fatigued, constipated, painful abdomen, irregular bleeding (I am on the implant contraception and do not have periods) and pain during and after sex. The results of my scan were a 3cm x 3cm hemorrhagic cyst which the sonographer said "it looked as though it's bled into itself" and an enlarged uterus. She has recommended that I am scanned again in 6 weeks time.

The doctor has spoken with my since and has said I could have endometriosis, or 'something else'. I asked for a CA125 blood test which she has agreed to and has booked me back in for my future scan in 6 weeks time.

After doing my own research I'm concerned that the cyst has been wrongly diagnosed given all of my symptoms and the fact I am on birth control and have never experienced cysts before.

I am not sure whether I am over thinking things but I wanted to hear from other people who may have had a hemorrhagic cyst that was infact ovarian cancer.

My doctor has not explicitly said that it isn't ovarian cancer but I feel that as I am young (27 with 2 children) they won't suspect it to be. However, I feel I know my body and something definitely isn't right.

thank you in advance to anyone that replies :)

  • Just went through the song and dance of resetting my password just so I can say my symptoms were nearly identical  - hemrorrhagic cysts, very high CA125 (I think it was 290), same age even - and it was endometriosis.  At the time the other possible diagnosis was a mucinous cystadenoma; my gp said he was 95% sure it wasn't cancer and the gyn/onc said he was 99% sure.  So they could be thinking of a benign or borderline something  else, not necessarily cancer.  One of the cysts was 11 cm.  Not pleasant, but benign; the only reason I have an account here was an unrelated thankfully false alarm!  (And then my thyroid went rogue on me but I'm not even sure if I posted here about that!)

Endo can definitely make you feel not right.  I didn't realize just how unpleasant it was until I had a hysterectomy (I had an irregular fibroid that was potentially a sarcoma, so I just opted to have the whole mess out at once) and had all of it removed.  I had a fibroid, an ovarian endometrioma and endometriosis all the way to my bowels.  Once it was all out I could actually feel its absence for a few days.  I almost cried after the surgery when I realized that.  I don't think anything has ever felt  so good.  Endo can be hard to diagnose but it can be treated or cured depending on what route you choose.

There's a wonderful site call hystersisters that got me through my surgeries and other treatment attemps - while it's nominally for people having hysterectomies and that's a big part of the site, people in cancer diagnosis limbo show up pretty often and everyone is super nice.  I met some long-term ovarian cancer survivors there so they may be able to answer any specific questions you have.  Not that I think you have it  - if I had any money I'd bet it all on this being endometriosis.  I hope you get answers soon!

  • Hi Molly,

Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond and for providing me with some degree of comfort.

I have had my CA125 results back with a reading of 27. The doctor has asked that I have another scan but doesn't seem concerned.

I hope you are well, and thanks again.

  • I'm glad your doctor isn't worried, and I hope you're feeling better about it as well!

  • Hi, I had a ultra sound yesterday. I delayed it since March due to lockdown.
I was referred by a&e dr as I had terrible awful pains (worse than labor). Thought it was appendix so went in. It's not really bothered me since-the occasional pains in between periods.
Anyway, I got appointment yesterday and the Sonographer said quite confidently that she thinks it's a haemoradic cyst which bleeds in to itself. I don't seem to have any symptoms other than period pains to left side which come and go.

absolutely terrified and-wondered if the sonographer would be qualified/experienced enough to be able to say what she thought it was.

I'm 40 with a 7 and 1 year old and absolutely terrified it's something worse. How long did it take to get results etc after your ultra sounds? How did you manage to keep it together? X
