Is it normal to have a core biopsy at age 24

I'm 24 years old and felt a lump in my breast, had my appointment at the breast clinic on Monday and they said its a 25mm solid mass on the US and took a core biopsy. I have heard other people my age being told they have a fibroadenoma just through the US alone, no need for biopsy. Is the fact that they took a biopsy at my age a bad sign? I'm freaking out. The doctors were also very elusive and did not give me much information.

    Hi Stressdress,

    The truth is that nobody can tell you whether or not there is anything untoward at present. Not all lumps are cancerous and many are benign. The only way to be certain is from the results of your biopsy. This can also determine the type of breast cancer and grade, if anything is found.

    Your appointment at the breast clinic is as much to disprove the presence of cancer, as much as it is to prove this. Although not impossible to get a diagnosis at 24, this is rare.

    One heartening fact is that. out of every 8 people referred to the breast clinic, only 1 will be diagnosed with cancer - here's hoping that you are one of the lucky ones!

    Hello, 

     

    Just wanted to say I had a core biopsy of a lump when I was around 27 and it was later confirmed to be a fibroadenoma. The consultant said it was hard to be sure from US alone and best to test to be sure. It was enormously worrying at the time, especially the waiting for results, so wishing you the best.

    Thank you, they've said to call tomorrow and see if the results are back, hence I am completely out of my mind! I am also a genuine hypochondriac so makes it worse haha

    Unfortunately, the way you are feeling is perfectly normal. We've all been there and know how stressful it can be. I hope that you do get your results tomorrow. It will save you waiting and worrying over the weekend.

    Hi there,

    The nurse called me and said it seems to be a benign ductal tissue with calcification. The only caveat is that the doctor was unable to attend the multidisciplinary consultation they usually have, so will be writing to me in a couple of weeks to confirm. This is obviously a relief and I hope it does not seem to change when the doctor manages to take a look!

    This is just the news that you needed to hear, although it would have been even better if your doctor had been present at the MDT meeting to confirm this. Still, I'm sure that your team will have plenty of experience between them, so the results are more than likely to remain the same. I am just delighted for you.

    Please let us know when you hear from your consultant just to make sure.
