Lump behind ear lob, 6 months after cancer removal

I have just had an ultrasound for a growing lump behind my earlobe. 6 months ago, I had salivary gland cancer of the parotid gland (acinic cell carcinoma) the surgery was a success!

But once I had this new lump checked today, I had to have a biopsy with it too which they mentioned a possible reassurance tumour. Obviously I am getting a little worried as they were scanning it to see if it was just scar tissue.

Has anyone else had a very fast growing lump (12 weeks ago I had an MRI, with the confirmation of no cancer) after having cancer surgically removed.

  • Just wanted to say hi JCOP. Try not to worry and I hope you get the results of your biopsy soon. Here are some tips to help with the wait.

  • Hi JCOP,

just wondered how you got on with the lump behind your ear?

I too was diagnosed with Acinic Cell cancer back in August and had my superficial parotidectomy four weeks ago so still early days for me.

My original worry was a growing lump behind my ear which turned out to be a swollen gland but having it scanned highlighted the tumour which I had no idea about!!

Did you have any post op problems? I have got a wonky mouth and eye and still have numbness on the left side of my face.

  • Hi AllyPally123

We have had the same surgery. My facial movements all recovered fully after 4 months. Give it time and make sure you do your facial exercises. The only issues I suffer since my op is numbness on certain parts of my face/neck/ear. But over the months I've just gotten used to it. My scar is so neat no one notices it. Goodluck with the rest of your recovery.

I was finally diagnosed yesterday with the new lump behind my ear, as a neuroma. They are not too concerned and I'm waiting my new MRI results to confirm.

  • Thank you for replying, I'm glad your lump isn't likely to be a recurrence as I know what a worry that is.

I am told to expect some facial numbness long term Which is a small price to pay as long as the cancer has gone!

    Thanks again xx

  • Hi JCOP,

I had the same surgery as you last year.  Was such a shock as it was biopsies the year before and was told it was an oncyotoma.

What like is your scar, mines is so faded you can hardly see it but I do have a thick lump of tissue round the scar under around the ear. What like is your scar?

What stage were you? Did you need any further treatment?

    Thanks,

    Tracey
