I'm worried about my sister

My sister might have breast cancer that can't be cured and I love her so much. She is young and I need her, we are one person in many ways. She's kindhearted, funny and intelligent, I love talking to her. She's unique and I can't get my head around how sad and scared I feel. We find out the results in a week. How will we cope with the wait? I've complained because she was turned away when she tried multiple times to get tested. There were solid reasons to predict this and yet nothing was done. I'm angry and I'm scared and I don't know what to do.

    Hi RandLalways,

Sadly, many young people get turned away or overlooked simply because of their age, which is so wrong, because cancer is no respector of age. I am so sorry to hear about your sister's situation. The best way to cope with the wait is to keep busy. This doesn't have to be with work, but maybe with more pleasurable pursuits.

There are so many unknowns at this stage that the wait is very scary. If it's of any consequence to you, it gets a little easier to deal with once you know exactly what you are dealing with. Try to steer clear of Dr Google at present, as this won't help you at all.

I have had two bouts of breast cancer in the past 11 years and have lost a number of relatives and close friends to cancer too. It is a cruel disease, but treatments are improving all the time. I sincerely hope that if your sister does have cancer, that it's not as advanced as you expect and that she can get treatment. All you can do is to be there for her and support her as best you can.

Do please keep in touch and let us know when you get the results. We are always here for both of you.

    Kind regards,
    Jolamine xx
