How do you not go insane waiting?

I'm not dealing with my anxiety well.

There is a lump in my breast.. I visited doctor 4 months ago and she said it was nothing. Later on my breast swelled up and I finally got referred to breast clinic last week. Straight away they were concerned and did mammogram / ultrasound / biopsy all at once and they told me they were 'worried' and that it was most likely cancer. Since then I've felt achy and my neck / arm is aching.. I have three more days until results and I just can't deal.. I'm a mess... can't think of anything else apart from this and how scared I am. All the worst things are constantly going through my mind. How do you all cope with the waiting?

  • Sorry to hear that. Hope you are ok x

  • I have been diagnosed with high grade DCIS lymph node positive. Awaiting HER negative.
I have no idea what all that means.
I've got to have CT and bone scan, then I'll have chemo once every 3 weeks for 5 months.
    how are you feeling Ellen?

  • Not great to be honest.. in shock still. I know we're supposed to feel better after all the waiting but I'm still worried sick about my MRI/CT...

  • Hi Ellen,

Everyone goes insane to some degree whilst waitng regardless of who they thought they were before they joined this awful club.

Dr Google has a lot to answer for.

This may sound trite but current NICE guidance to GPs is that if they think the risk of a patient having cancer is greater than 5% they should refer down a cancer diagnostic pathway. The vast majority of patients referred down a cancer diagnostic pathway are told that they don't have cancer.

Those of us who are unlucky enough to be diagnosed are far more likely to survive than any preceding generation even if, like me, we're told that we're already at Stage 4.

None of this will stop anyone from being anxious but it might help people remember that a referral doesn't mean they have cancer and that a cancer diagnosis isn't always the death sentence that we fear.

Good luck to everyone following this thread.

    Dave

  • I discovered Wim Hof method when I was going through a very anxious period recently and it really helped me cope with the stress. It's a very simple breathing technique that is quick to do and very effecive. The breathing exercise causes the body to release dopamine which gives you a natural "high" and makes you feel calm. Do a search on YouTube for "Wim Hof breathing technique".

Also, I know it's hard but, as other posters have mentioned, try to avoid googling.
