Pet/ct tomorrow- please could you share your experience

Funny enough I’m most scared of the radioactive tracer they use! I have pots and my heart rate is fast pretty much all the time and I’m worried it’s going to shoot up with glucose injection.

Also can you be allergic to this? Google says yes but very rare but when I spoke to department they said they have never heard of anyone having a reaction to the radioactive tracer.

Iv had breathlessness, chest pain, fevers for 2 years , recurring pericarditis 3 bouts last year and now a diagnoses of pots so every time I stand my heart rate goes to 200bpm and stays there until I sit down! So I either faint or panic and get myself in a state!

Im only 30 with two children so I’m frightened, they want to make sure there is no lymphoma or tumour causeing all the above,

if anyones had this scan please could you share your experience xx

  • Hi Amy

I had this type of scan last November and found it very straightforward. Once the radioactive tracer was injected (didn’t feel it) I had to sit/ lie quietly in a room for about an hour while the tracer worked its way round my body. The scan itself did not take long at all, and I found it much easier than for example an MRI because the scanner is more “open” while I find the mri machine is quite claustrophobic for me. So basically I had no issues with it, but appreciate you will feel very anxious with your other health concerns. Hope it goes well for you. xx

  • Thank you for your reply I’m most nervous about the tracer but hopefully like you I won’t feel it, xxx

  • I actually had one yesterday, would say easier than MRI. Was over before I knew it. Sat in room afterward for 30 minutes after cannula taken out.
I get claustrophobic a bit in MRI but no issues at all with CT. I have another tomorrow part of a radiotherapy planning session.

I understand your stressed but the staff will put you at ease and it'll be over before you know it.

    Good luck x

  • Hi Mermaid,

thank you for your reply, how was the injection tracer for you? Did you feel the solution? Did it increase heart rate or anything as I’m more scared of the injection before the scan? Xx
