Worried about MRI and Nasendoscopy

Hi Everyone,

I`m new here. I`m very very stressed after my ENT phone consultation. I`ve been strugling with sore throat and ear pain for few weeks already and it`s mostly on one side, but sometimes I feel pain on the other ear too. The pain disapear when I swallow food or drink. I have it every day, but not all the time - it comes and goes. The doctor I spoke with said I need to deffinetly come and see him for nasendoscopy next week and he wants me to do MRI of my neck/throat beforehand. When I type MRI and nasendoscopy on google all I see is Cancer diagnosis. I`m completely out of my mind right now especially my grandad died of vocal cord cancer and my little brother had lymphomia (luckly he`s won the battle). I`m trying to think - I do not have any other symptoms (no swollen lymphs, I`m in a good physical shape etc but on the other hand I`ve been smoking for about 12 years (I know stupid me). Do you have any tips to ease down stress and anxiaty whilst waiting for my appointment? I would really apretiate that!

Thank you x

  • Heya .
this exact scenario happened to me . My symptoms were a large right tonsil and earache on the right side going into my neck and occasional pain in my left ear . My throat isn't sore, just a bit achy.
I had a telephone appointment too which was a bit useless as they can't see anything. I went in for a face to face and they put a camera up my nose and booked an mri . It all came back fine and not showing anything sinister but I have to return in October for a follow up to see how things are . They couldn't really explain the earache and I've now had on and off earache for 6-7 weeks .
Someone else told me that most of the time these urgent referrals turn out to be nothing , I panicked and googled myself crazy and it did me no good whatsoever.
I too had no lymph node swelling and they said that is a really positive sign .
try and relax as best you can ,I know it's not easy but distraction is good.  here if you want to chat or add me as a friend x

  • Hi Winnie14,

Thank you so much for your response and your story is very re-assuring! Hearing that really made me less stress and i`ve realised that there could be a happy end to this story. I will try to keep myself busy and not stress before I get results...

I hope your ear ache will go away soon and never get back xx

  • Hi

I am the similar - had an MRI, but now I am going in for a biopsy as a slight asymmetry was noticed at the base of the tonge - so, very scared right now.   It's good your mri came clear.

  • Hiya BPkr ,

Is it a biospy of your tongue or tonsils ? I have asymmetrical tonsils and they did say that can be caused by many other things than cancer , inflammation , reflux and post nasel drip being a few of reasons . x

  • My tonsils look asymmetrical to me, but that was not discussed -  it the letter I received it says  asymmetry at the base of the toungue ...I do have reflux and post nasal drip.
It will be long days & weeks ahead by the time I know the results.

Thanks Winnie, pleased things seem fine for you & hope ear ache eases off - hay fever?

  • Hopefully it won't be too long before you get some answers , if they are not rushing I would take this as a positive?

thank you , I would just like to know the cause of my earache but no one seems to be able to tell me .

best of luck to you x

  • Hi there. I just had a nasendospocy and MRI two days ago. Its all clear except I have a little inflammation on the left tonsil which I may have to check in few weeks (as follow up appointment) so I feel much calmer now.. The pain is still there like in your case Winnie and the doctor suggested I may have to get it removed in the future if the symptoms persist. I was also diagnosed with an acid reflux so this may be causing all the problems. I hope he biopsy came ok for you BPkr!

    Thanks for your support X

  • Hiya Martynana

I'm so pleased your scan was clear . What symptoms are you still having? I'm still having ear and neck pain :(

yes I've heard acid reflux can deffo cause inflammation in the tonsil .

    xx

  • Hi Winnie,

I had nasendospcopy today so my throat feels a bit funny so hard to tell but I defo have less tention in my neck/throat but still feel inflammation on the left side back of throat. Ear still hurts too but everything on the video looked perfectly fine. Doctor said that if this pain persist I may have to have my tonsil removed or cut back. I'm on the ani reflux meds since Monday and everything eased down a bit but I need to give it a bit more time. I think in my case in my be a combonation of reflux, allergy symptoms and an old infection I had in my ear few months ago... Are you taking any meds at the moment or are you allergic to pollen by any chance? This summer the pollen levels are crazy and some people got hay fever for the first time ever. It may appear as inflammation in sinus area... I hope you can find a solution for your pain, let me know if I can help at all x

  • thank you , That's exactly how I feel , pressure on one side of my throat and earache on and off throughout the day . I do get hayfever too. I've had this earache 6-7 weeks now but would be a lingering infection I guess . I'm hoping all goes back to normal by October as I don't fancy a tonsillectomy:(

my mri scan just showed a slightly larger right tonsil and the nose camera was normal too. I'm sure I have stones in it though as I can feel and taste them :(

    Xx
