I have been told I may have breast cancer

Can an ultrasound give a definitive diagnosis of breast cancer? I was told a week ago that my lump looks like breast cancer but they'll know more when the biopsy results are back. Is there a chance I don't have cancer or is it just that they don't know what type of breast cancer?  I can't sleep and my mind is working overtime as I'm scared

  • Sorry you are just starting this journey & really hope things work out well for you. There really is no certainty until the results are back & then I’m sure you’re be told either way fairly quickly.

Unfortunately I think waiting is the hardest part.

  • I am really sorry to read this. All I can say is that an ultrasound diagnosis was used in my Mums breast cancer and my friends swollen lymph in her groin which they advised her was cancer (it was) so yes - it can be used to diagnose but not definitively until a needle biopsy is done. I also know people who have had breast lumps that look like cancer on ultrasound but turn out to be a benign condition. Waiting for test results is awful. Hope you get good news.

  • Thanks everyone - I feel much more positive this morning and will tackle whatever it is with everything I’ve got. Thanks for replying and support xx
  • Hi. I was in the same position 5 weeks ago on Tuesday. Went back for results on 22 May and had my surgery on Wednesday. Totally understand how you feel, that first 10 day wait was the worst. They did not pick mine up on the mammogram but they saw something they were not happy with on the US. The surgeon also told me on the first day that they thought it was BC which was confirmed on 22 May. When it was confirmed I was not shocked and did not actually cry at that point. You will be totally looked after I can promise you x

  • Hi, I have had it both ways in june 2019 I had ultrasound and needle biopsy and it came back benign.

Then in december 2019 problems started again and had the ultrasound and needle biopsy in a different area of the same breast  and it came back that I had DCIS.

I had a right sided mastectomy 4 weeks ago

All I can say is take it one day at a time, this waiting game is the worst bit and once you have a definate diagnosis and what you are facing it makes it easier.

    Everything moves quickly after diagnosis.

You will be well looked after, and the breat care nurses are lovely if you have any questions or just need a chat or rant give them a ring.

I wish you all the luck in the world and if you have any questions, please just ask x

  • Totally agree with you Hayley. That first day I thought my life was over!!! The breast care is the best. X

  • Gosh you're all so lovely Thankyou. I'll let you know how I get on xxxx

  • Please do. I can promise you, it gets better xxx

  • Hi Hollyberry,

You have had yours confirmed..how you getting on?

Do you know your treatment plan? What surgery you need?

I had my follow up results appointment after surgery on monday and it hadnt spread to my lymph nodes and I dont need any further treatment...yay.

Through all of this the worst part is the waiting, and not knowing what to expect. I woke up from surgery thinking was going to be flat on one side and scarred everywhere...because they put an expander in until I can have reconstruction..I look normal, just no nipple and a 4 inch scar...I'm totally amazed x

If you have any questions just ask xx

  • Yes, I had mine confirmed on 22 May. Grade 2 invasive lobular cancer but it has been caught early. An MRI the next week showed only the one tumour and lymph nodes do look ok. Initial biopsies of lymph nodes were negative but thought it may be a false negative but MRI looked ok. Had surgery on Wednesday and they also took sentinel lymph nodes. Had wide local incision and have not seen scar yet. Going to nurse to get dressings changed today. Have been told I will need 3 weeks radio and 10 years of tablets but will not know about chemo until I go back for results 2 weeks today. Very pleased with surgery and from what I can see boobs look quite even but if they are not, they will even up for me (I am DD so don't mind them being a bit smaller lol!). Every step seems like another hurdle and feel like I am almost there. It's so odd to think that 5 weeks ago I was told I had BC and in 2 weeks I may have got rid of it!! Xxx
