Hard, immovable lymph node behind ear

Hello all

I have been watching a hard immovable lymph node (post auricular/behind ear) since Feburary.

I have only recently just been to see doctor and have been referred urgently. Dr has really worried me, as I have left this hard node for 5 months, thinking it might go away or shrink; now he seems to think it is something suspicious as I have a simiar supraclavicular node the same from 3 years ago. I was told to watch that one.

It is under 1cm (maybe 8mm), hard, immoveable (its up against skull/boney bits), I thnk it may have enlarged very slightly. The area aches a bit from time to time, though I do occasionally have a prod. I have tried to research, but only scray stuff comes up.

Can lymph nodes stay up for this long and it be 'nothing'? Are hard, immoveable nodes always cancer related?

Thank you if anyone has any similar experience, and what happened. Trying not to panic :-(

I didnt sleep last night, trying not to panic.

  • Yes I went back a few months ago and the GP felt the lumps and said they didn't feel sinister so nothing was done. With time they have shrunk back down so I stopped worrying about them.
If they're not huge I wouldn't worry personally but you can always make an appointment with your GP to put your mind at ease. Better be safe than sorry is what I think!

  • Hi. I have had a hard lump behind my left year, a round 2cm immovable lymph node, for more than 15 years. I had it seen when I first noticed it age 23 and they told me not to worry. It has grown very slightly in the last 15 years (maybe from 1.5 to 2 cm). It does not hurt and has not caused me any problem.

I hope this helps reassure folks!

  • Hi! I was just wondering if you still had this? Because I have found one behind my right ear it feels squidgey a little bit but hard if I press it and feels like it's along my bone/ part of my bone. It doesn't hurt or anything and I don't have no other obvious symptoms so I'm just wondering if this could be the same thing? It's probably less than a cm in size but feels a little bit pea shaped. If you could get back to me that'll be amazing as I'm such an anxious person for when it comes to lumps and bumps.

    Tia, xx

  • Hi I was just wondering if you still had this? I've a small lump behind my ear. It's squishy when I touch it but if I push hard on it, it feels hard like it's a part of my bone? It's about 1cm or less in size and it's circular almost like a tiny pea. Was  this similar to yours ? I don't have any other symptoms so probably nothing to worry about but I'm going to get it to checked to put my mind at rest and be on the safe side of things. To me it moves with the bone and muscle of my skull.
id love to hear something back from anyone. Thank you xx

  • Hey,

im similar. Small lump behind left ear. Feels quite immovable. Appeared yesterday. Googled it. No obvious signs of infection, although earlier in the week I suffered a bad sty, and I do have ongoing dandruff. NHS say wait two weeks before seeing a gp (unless several other symptoms). Of course, I can't stop googling. Anyway, I'm in the same boat, so I hope you feel better. I'm not going to worry about this. Did you see the doctor? I've never had anything like this before. I'm late thirties, female.

  • Hey! I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one.. my friend also has the same sort of thing... I haven't seen a Gp yet but waiting for a phone call which should be sometime this week. I'm 18 and have had it for about 2-3 months. Completely painless. Although last night I thought I was able to move it. I'm also female. It feels so much better knowing other people are going through the same thing. I'm an anxious person so I'm terrible with things like this x

  • Me too! Please don't worry, apparently it's usually just an indicator that we might be a bit run down. I'm going to try and leave it for the recommended two weeks, but I think it's wise you've let the doctor know. Good luck and let me know how you get on x

  • Of course I'll let you know! Does yours feel like it is up against your skull if you push hard on it? x

  • Although mine feels immovable, I think it's still a a bit fleshy . It seems to be against a bony part of my head.

  • Ah yes this is the same as mine, it feels a little immovable but also a bit squidgey. Sorry to be a pain I'm such an anxious person things like this worry me x
