Dark mole

Hi all

I have had a mole on my leg for as long as I can remember and never thought anything of it until another mole of mine was raised so went to get it checked. Whilst there the GP said that one was fine however he was worried about the one on my leg. It isn't raised, it isn't a perfect circle but it is very misshapen, however very dark it is basically black. Sometimes GP's can make you panic as I have had an urgent referral to be checked within a weeks time. Im only 19 and only one person in my family has had cancer of any type and that is a distant relative? Anyone who can share some light please?

I know it's worrying but your GP is doing the right thing. NICE guidelines to GPs gives a list of things to check in a mole & to give them a score. If they score 3 or more the patient has to be referred to see a dermatologist. Your mole sounds to have scored 3 or more so a dermatologist needs to take a look at it. All that being said, 75% of patients referred to a dermatologist are given a clean bill of health so most patients have no problem. A dermatologist is the expert in this field & sometimes they need to remove the mole for a biopsy. Don't panic if that is suggested - again, many that have a biopsy get clear results.
Your young age means there is much less chance it's melanoma but it's good that you are being checked out quickly. Good luck & please let us know how you get on,
