Lump under armpit

Hi everyone,

this is my first post on here, I hope that this is in the correct section.

About 6 weeks ago I found a lump under my right armpit.  I thought that I had injured myself after a 13k stint on the concept 2 rower as I dint have much training at all leading the to event.  After 2 weeks when the pain went away I still had some discomfort and that's when I noticed the lump under my armpit.  I called my doctor and we had an appointment over the phone and he prescribed some medication as he thought it could have been a blocked lymph node.  After ten days he called me back and I informed him that there had been no changes, he then asked me to come in for a physical examination.  I was asked all kinds of questions and he said it was unlikely to be a muscle related injury.  I gave some blood and my white blood count was low (3.1 mil, and platelets low I think). He then referred me to a Haematologist.

the lump in my right armpit is the size of a squashed golf ball.  It doesn't cause me any pain but it is very uncomfortable when walking for example or if I lie on my right hand side.  I don't have any other symptoms and feel absolutely fine in myself although late last year I did have really itchy lower legs but some moisturising cream fixed that.

last week I saw the haematologist and she had a good look and gave more blood.  She referred me for a CT scan, then to follow a PET scan and possible biopsy.  The only information a really got is that Lymphoma or Leukemia was a strong possibility.

Now I spend days on google (bad idea I know) looking up everything and got myself in a right old state.  I eventually calmed down and then today I received a phone call from the hospital and have an appointment tomorrow but not for what I was told.  I am going in for an ultra sound led biopsy.

Right now I am so worried, have my recent blood results shown something? Why is this now being fast tracked and what will an ultra sound show? I have not had a call with regards to my blood tests, surely someone would have called me to explain if there are any problems?

my mind is now in overdrive and I really am panicking, has anyone here been in a similar situation?

  • Well I had by biopsy today.  It was not as bad as I was expecting and the doctors and nurses where great.  I get my results this Friday hopefully but the Doctors told me (although not an official diagnosis) that they suspect Hodgkin Lymphoma due to the size of the lump (5.2cm by 4.8cm).

Not the news I wanted but I guess now it's a waiting game.

im not quite sure what to think at the moment

  • Have I posted in the wrong area? I'm at a stage where I really am worrying and talking to people going through a similar situation would really help.

  • Hi Eddie and welcome to the forum.

The forum can get very busy which unfortunately means some posts can be missed from time to time but hopefully some of our members who are/have been in a similar situation will be along soon to offer their support and advice.

You can also join in on discussions about suspected Hodgkins Lymphoma by using the 'search forum' option in the blue bar above.

We know the next couple of days will be tough but we'll be here for you when you get your results on Friday.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Steph,

I had a call from the hospital this morning and they have referred me for a PET scan ASAP and told me so should get one this week.

im now even more worried as this is all being done so quickly and I still don't fully know what is wrong.
