Anyone elses child 1 tonsil larger than other

Hi,

My 5 yr old daughter is having a tonsillectomy next week. Im worried as NHS are doing the operation quite quickly considering everything thats going on too. Im happy they are but Im just a bit worried as to why.

As soon as lockdown was announced I noticed my daughters tonsil was quite large. Prior to this she has been coming  home from school weekly with a husky voice and sore throats but since being home she seems much better besides the large tonsil. I managed to speak to a GP who asked me to wait 6 weeks before they investigated further. I could only wait 3 and then called back asking for an ENT referral. I got one within a few weeks and they took my daughters bloods the same day and now she has a tonsillectomy booked for next week. He did say, he didn't think it was cancerous but really is there anyway of him knowing? Some days she feels like something is stuck in her throat, other days shes completely fine. Her breath can get a bit smelly.

Has anyone been through anything similar and it has turned out to be chronic inflammation of the tonsil and not cancer? I know its a common op but Im feeling quite anxious about it all.

  • Hi there

Can I ask what happened next?
My six year old daughter has one enlarged tonsil and waiting to see ENT. I only noticed it after she had appendicitis but it has definitely been enlarged for a month now. The larger tonsil reaches all the way into the middle and the other one is also inflamed and red but not as big. She doesn't have a sore throat strangely and it's definitely not Strep. She has been complaining of sounds in her ears though and pressure in her face.
    Many thanks
    Many thanks

  • Enlarged tonsils for 12 weeks (much worse on one side than the other) with abnormal bloods including liver function which could be indicative of cancer. GP said usual route was ENT referral but could she do more blood work as she felt it probably wasn't cancer. I agreed to getting more bloods done though still had to go to hospital as child (aged around 4) too distressed to do at local practice.

Outcome was child had multiple viruses.

Those 12 weeks were awful as child had no energy for weeks and horrible hard white stuff kept popping out of one tonsil (though we were told not strep).

I never would have thought tonsils could stay so big and inflamed for so long and not be anything serious especially with the liver result.

Child now adult. Tonsils still there. Problems resolved once over the multiple viral infections.

  • Hi

She had her tonsils removed, we are still waiting for histology results but no news as of yet which I am assuming is good news for now. Will hopefully have some results in 2 weeks.

Her bloods were normal so they didn't think it was anything serious so that was reassuring. Once you see an ENT consultant if one is very inflamed they will remove it within a few weeks.

  • Hi

Really hope all well with the histology results so can put your mind at rest. Good bloods were normal. Sending love to you and your daughter.x
