Thyroid FNA results

Hi I'm new to the forum.
About 5 weeks ago I found a lump in my neck and my voice was going croaky while I was singing a song.
I rang my GP, video call and then I was seen in person. Bloods done and urgent referral for an ultrasound. My bloods came back normal. 1 week later I had the ultrasound, my GP then phoned to say they had the results and I was put on a 2 week wait to see a consultant. Due to the current situation I had a phone call from the consultant 1 week later who requested another ultrasound and a possible FNA. I had this done 2 weeks ago and I get my official results over the phone tomorrow. I have spoken to my GP who says it has come back as follicular neoplasm but she doesn't really know what the outcome will be.
I'm guessing I'll know more tomorrow. I'm really nervous about what the consultant will say, I assist in operating theatres anyway as my job but its all a bit different when it's happening to you.
Has anyone been in this situation before? I'm sure there is but nice to chat with others x

  • Hello Faceache2020,

A warm welcome to our forum!

By now you will probably have had your results so I just wanted to say I hope everything went well and that you found out more. Did you get any more specific information?

I hope that you will hear from others here who have been in a similar situation before and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie,

Thank you for the warm welcome.

So I spoke to the consultant yesterday afternoon. I have a follicular neoplasm and they got some really good cells off from the aspirate. He said there are two types, cancerous and non cancerous. I had 2 options. 1) surgery to remove the lobe and tumour or 2) watch and wait and see how it goes but won’t know if it is cancerous unless they actually remove it.
I’ve opted for surgery as I don’t want it sitting there if it is cancerous.
I’ve got to go in to see him and have my vocal cords checked and I’ll be discussed at the MDT meeting to discuss further.
Surgery could be anytime between the end of June to the end of the year due to the current covid situation.
I feel ok (not sure how) and I'm managing to keep busy. I suppose it's the not knowing that bothers me

  • Update!

went to have my vocal cords check on Monday just gone. No problems there. However MDT want to down grade from a thy3 to a thy2. This is good news however this way they won't remove it. I want it out as I can feel it pressing on my throat and personally I think if there is even a possibility that this is thy3 then just get it out.
I am now feeling more anxious than before. I had another FNA on Friday to see what that comes back as but I honestly don't think the radiologist who did the 2nd FNA was a thorough as the first. He seemed to literally be in there for a couple of seconds where as the previous radiologist counted down from 20 seconds and used a larger needle to ensure he got enough cells.
I just feel like I'm not getting anywhere at the moment and I'm more stressed than ever.
sorry for the rant. Just feeling a little sorry for myself today.

  • Hi there! I'm recently diagnosed Thy3f after FNA and am waiting for the MDT confirmation of surgery. That must be so frustrating for you to be downgraded at this late stage. I had no idea they could do that, as I was given the impression it was more or less a "rubber stamp". I really hope you can persuade them to go back to Plan A.

  • Hi. Thank you for your message.

I hope you are ok and get the green light to go ahead soon. How are you feeling?
I just feel like the consultant said yes that's fine and now it may not be happening.
I feel it pressing on my throat all the time, a t-shirt feels as though it is pressing even more. I may sound daft here but it really isn't helpful. I just want it out.
I really hope you get sorted soon.

  • Thank you! Right now, I'm finding out how terrible I am at waiting for news. I think the MDT was last week, so just can't settle to anything until I know for sure what's going on. I'm literally climbing the walls waiting. Mine is pressing on my trachea so is making me cough and I would really like that to stop.

  • Is it just on one side. Mine is. I know it's horrible to say but I'm so pleased it's not just me. My husband said I sounded terrible when I was asleep the other night as my breathing was terrible. I was laid on my left side and it was obviously pressing.
I just want that feeling to stop. I hope you get some answers really soon and you get your surgery.
    What a pain!

  • Yes, just one side. And, like you, I have poor breathing when sleeping. My ultrasound said it looked like it was pressing on the trachea, which would explain it.

I know what you mean about feeling relieved there are others out there.  I found a Facebook group called Thyroid Cysts and Nodules and Thyroid Illnesses. There are a few other people on there (a mix of countries, but some from the UK) who helped a lot through the whole FNA process. It's been useful to read other people's stories on there and to see their post surgery pictures.

As a tip, you could try getting a V-shaped pillow which will stop you turning fully onto one side. Someone online recommended getting one for after surgery anyway, as you have to sleep propped up for a time. I did have one when I was pregnant and found it really comfy (wish I'd kept it now!).

Keep pushing! It might take a bit longer, but you should get there in the end if you're adamant enough. Maybe worth going private if possible?

  • Thank you.
That's great. I'll have a look at the page.

im hoping neither of us are waiting too long to be honest. I think they are fed up of hearing my voice at the end of the phone. I can't complain at how quick they have been. I just need to get it sorted.

Thank you and keep me posted on your progress

  • How big is your nodule? Mine measured at 3.5x2.5x1.5cm last time I was scanned. X
