Worried about lymphoma / Seeming too pushy for a diagnosis

I'm a 17 year old male and have had 5 enlarged, painless, rubbery/hard lymph nodes for 4 months (in front of ear, in neck, and groin; some are moveable some aren't). I've also had an itch that comes over the upper part of my body for 2 years now (though it has been happening more frequently since this January) - it seems to come on randomly, is really bad, and doesn't leave a rash (goes away by itself after a few minutes). I've felt like my appetite's been lower and I've had less energy than usual in the last few months, though I could just be overthinking that.

I have a few other symptoms that have been worrying me, but I don't think they're serious enough to really amount to anything (there's a good chance I'm just "imagining" them). I've done a lot of googling (which I know I shouldn't have) and now I'm really worried about possibly having lymphoma. I saw a doctor about this a few months ago, and they said to come back in a few months if I was still having these symptoms. I am, so I went back yesterday, and the doctor said he didn't know what was causing all of this and to come back in a few more months if my symptoms continue.

I was a bit frustrated by this - even if all of my symptoms aren't caused by something serious, I wish I at least knew why they were happening and if there were some way to stop them (especially the itch).

I told my mum what the doctor said about coming back again, and she wants to call the doctor tomorrow and ask I get referred for a blood test. I'm worried this will seem really pushy. Has anyone else had an experience like this? Would it be better to wait 3 more months to see the doctor again (like he said) or is being so assertive worth it in this case? I'm conflicted because I'm worried, but it would be horribly embarrassing to be so insistent, then get tested to find that nothing's wrong.

  • HI!

I've been going through some of same symptoms as you seem to be having, I have two lymph nodes on the back of my neck - one is hard and painless and the other is softer but slighlty more painful.

The harder node has been there since last year so I hve left it a while but Ive started to notice itchiness all over my body so have been referred to an ENT doctor for futher testing.

If you are feeling anxious dont be afriad to push for some sort of answer, it seems unfair for the doctor to just tell you to wait. Try not to overthink - google alwyas shows you the worse possible scenerio so try not to serach too much.

I hope it all works out for you!

  • Give,

I am also going through this, I've been having pain in my groin and underarms that comes and goes and recently found a hard lymph node in my neck but not sure how long it's actually been there. Ivw also had an itch that comes and goes hut is there every day. I had blood drawn at the doctor on Monday and was told if the lymph node isnt gone hell refer for ultrasound...its still there. I'm 20 with an 11 month old little girl. My mum died of lymphoma so this is playing on my mind a lot especially now that I'm a mum myself.

Hope everything works out for you

  • Hi,

I have also noticed a pain in my pelvis and underarms but just put it down to strain.

I know its difficult but try not to panic, the ultrasaound will give you answers and alot of your symptoms could easily be completely unrealted.

Im also not sure how long mu llump has been there but I think its been there for quite a while.

I hope everything goes well with the ultrasound!
