'tumour markers' standard procedure with ovarian cysts?

I have a query regarding blood tests 'tumour markers'.

I have bilateral endometrioma (blood filled ovarian cysts) and have recently had an MRI after they were picked up on an ultrasound.

What I'm concerned about is why the consultant wants me to have blood tests, all of which are tumour markers for ovarian cancer. Are these blood tests procedure when cysts are large or not?

Thanks

  • Hi, i had trouble with my periods a few years back, could bleed for nearly two weeks, abdominal pain, low iron levels. My doctor referred me to gynae but also ordered a ca125 blood test which is a tumour marker for cancer as my mam had passed away from cervical cancer.

Levels came back raised and above normal levels which was very frightening as you would be thinking the worst. I ended up having a cyst on my ovary, it was removed and tested and ok. My periods calmed down after that and the ca125 levels also came down.

Just remember if your bloods/ tumour marker comes back higher than normal, don't panic either. Mine was high because of the non cancerous, benign cyst. Also, it is sometimes just a precaution having it done too so try not to worry.
