Scared out of my mind: stool streaked with blood.

Hi,

I have an appointment next Tuesday, but I might just lose my mind till then. Any advice, until I see the doc next Tuesday?

1.I have been dieting since 3 months ago and one month ago I started noticing white cotton/paper like stuff in the stool. This dissapeared eventually.

2. Two weeks ago, I was going to a store and while on my way there, I realized I might be having soon diarrhea. I had no possibility of going to a toilet due to the virus, so I 'held' it in. I was walking aprox 1.25 miles (2 kilometers), without a loo and I 'held' it in several times and it was a 'go back' kind of hold and I barely made it before an accident happened. After going to the toilet, the first part was solid, followed by diarrhea. I thought nothing strange of it since I was eating cherries and strawberries. But when trying to flush, I noticed a darker spot between the rest. The diarrhea continued and this time, I noticed some bright red thing between the pieces. It was very very little but it scared me a lot. I could also notice very little bright red blood on the TP.

My mind was telling me that this was caused by the 'no loo' situation, but regardless, I started watching before I flush.

3. The next few times, I thought it was normal, but I cannot tell for sure as I didn't watch with my phone's lantern. And this brings me to the present. After eating some fish in tomato sauce, I noticed that my next stool had some strange jelly like things that bound some pieces. The jelly had a reddish tint.

4. Today as I looked again, I could see clearly with the lantern that there are some faint streaks of blood which isn't bright red, but it is not black either. I also had a softer stool after, which wasn't exactly diarrhea, with the same streaks. As you can imagine I freaked out and I'm currently out of my mind. The last few times after the BM, my anus was stinging/burning. My stools aren't narrower than usual, but the last part seems to be a shade darker than the rest.

My personal history: Female, less than a month ago I turned 30. No family history. I don't drink nor smoke. I am not obese nor fat. I think I do suffer of constipation. When dieting I go aprox once or twice per week. Lately, I have been going every 2 or three days. Most of the time is solid, but sometimes it happens to be softer - but I do chew sugarfree gum, take magnesium and eat fruits.

  • I know this sounds weird, but have you tried touching the red stuff, maybe with like a cotton bud. I have had something similar a while ago but whilst "investigating" I discovered the red things were actually not blood despite how they looked and instead they were undigested tomato. Just a thought x

  • I made it so I could look closely. I used a toothpick and it has a jelly like consistency. It's also outside, covering the stool and not inside - which actually scares me the most, as it is extremely unlikey for that to be something undigested. It's not a lot, those are fine streaks that without strong light might be missed, but those are there. Also it doesn't look bright red, but the tint is reddish.

According to Dr. Google it's probably mucus which brings my anxiety to a all time high. I don't have any abdominal discomfort or even bloating, but sometimes I do hear  some gurgling.

Either way, next Tuesday seems too far away and I'm thinking the worse. I'm not a doctor, but the online research doesn't exactly point to something benign.

  • Oh I see. Yeah, then I understand the concern but I'm glad you have an appointment soon and will get to the bottom of it. I'm currently experiencing symptoms that all point to bowel cancer or crohns which isn't encouraging either, but for me there's a lot of pain in my abdomen. Perhaps just to experiment try not to eat anything red and see what happens? Anyhow I'm hoping the best for you x

  • Thank you! Hoping the best for you too. X

  • Hey, try not to stress. Easier said then done I know but if your stool looks 'streaked' with blood and your anus is stinging after your bowel movement then it may be that you have haemorrhoids. Especially if the blood is bright red then this means it's come from just within your anus and not deep within your bowel as that blood is usually dark and indicative of bleeding inside which is a lot more worrying. It sounds like fresh blood and you may just have a little haemorrhoid inside your anus that you're bursting on your bowel movement.

  • Hello Maryssaa,

white cotton likes stuff sounds like *** could be the lining of the bowel being sloughed away.If you are constipated and only passing stools every three days that sounds a long time and a bit rough on your bowel. If the lining is removed l could see how you would  bleed and have mucous jelly on your stools as the bowel tries to heal itself. An inflamed bowel could then progress to trigger diarrhea,in effect mimicking the effects of ibs.

Its good you are seeing a doctor and be sure to raise all your points to ensure you get the best possible chance of a correct diagnosis.A list with bullet points of symptoms handed to them at the outset gives you them the chance to come back to you with detailed questions and means like most, you will not remember something you should have said ten minutes after the consultation finished,

                                        Good luck,

                                                           David

  • I partly understood what you explained, and it makes sense, but if that's the case, does this mean the worst? I used Dr. Google far too much today, my head is spinning and I can no longer make a difference between sinister and not.

Also, thanks for the tips. I'll surely raise all my issues as I am truly worried.

  • Thank you so much for this answer. I'm ashamed to admit it but today I had a meltdown after seeing the stools. You just never know and the mere thought of the worse is frightening. I don't think I could qualify the streaks as bright red, but those are definitly reddish and not dark nor black. We'll see how it goes.

Hopefully it won't turn out to be anything sinister. Long time until Tuesday, but no other choice.

  • Hello Maryssaa,

What l was trying to convey that diet can cause a bowel issue that then has a knock on effect,so no that is not a worst case, and if so a change of diet could solve the issues.Aside from having had bowel cancer l also have reared a good few millions of pigs, who have a very similar bowel to humans, and have dealt with issues arising from incorrect diets, What looks like insignificant changes can lead to big effects, which lead to strress ,which leads to greater problems

What you are currently describing sounds more like inflamed bowel than cancer, you just need to establish the cause of the inflammation,

  • Hopefully all's well for you. Thank you for taking the time to explain further.

I did change my diet 3 months ago - more protein, less carbs which also meant little fiber. At the beginning, the only day when I 'ate normally' was Sunday. For two months, aside from constipation - which wasn't exactly a surprise given my eating habits, I had no other problems.

After adding Saturday to 'normal eating days' the problems with 'the white suff' began.. and then the rest.

I really hope it won't turn out to be something bad, but I guess I'll have an ideea after my appointment. I should also stay away from Dr Google, but it's not that easy.
