Waiting for dermatology but experiencing pain

Hello,

I'm currently waiting to be seen by dermatology for a mole on my foot, unfortunately it's taken a bit longer to be seen than I would have hoped due to COVID but I have an appointment in just under 2 weeks.
My concern is that I've been having a lot of pain in my foot - both a soreness of the skin and also a deeper muscular sort of pain. I did speak with my GP but he just said it was unrelated and put me on painkillers.
Obviously my worry is that something malignant might be spreading, I just wondered if that would present symptoms like this? I will of course talk to the dermatologist when I can but hoping for some reassurance in the mean time.
Thank you

  • Hello Storm2020

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with this concern about a mole at the moment. It's good to know that you have an appointment arranged.

It's understandable that you're feeling concerned about the pain but it sounds positive that your GP isn't overly concerned. I wonder if you're distributing the weight differently on your foot due to the soreness in the skin? That could be causing you some discomfort.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses then you're welcome to call them. They may be able to offer you some advice and information. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that the hospital are able to improve things for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

I'm sorry you are having to wait for your appointment & that you are now suffering from other symptoms.

Melanoma, if that is what your mole turns out to be, does not cause any pain in the skin or muscle of the surrounding area. If the melanoma spreads it does so through either the lymphatic or blood system & it lodges in a lymph node, usually the nearest node to the melanoma - if the mole is on the foot it would spread to the node behind the knee or bypass that node & travel to the groin.

So due to the way it spreads, the pain & discomfort you are suffering is not connected to your mole, as your GP has advised. It may be possible that, unconsciously, you have started to walk differently because of the mole on the sole of your foot. This may then be putting stress on the muscles of your foot & you may have a condition such as plantar fasciitis. So try not to focus on the discomfort & pay attention to how you are walking - it may start to ease. If your appointment goes well & it turns out your mole isn't melanoma, but you still have the foot pain, go back to your GP and they should refer you to a podiatrist.

Good luck with your appointment & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
