Lump on back of tounge and severe ear ache

Hi,

I've been looking through the forums for a while now.

I'm a 27 year old nursing student. I have had a relentless sore throat for over 3 months (March time), alongside an increasingly bad ear ache. I have exhausted all treatment options from GP 2 x course of antibiotics, 4 consecutive courses of oral thrush treatments.

I have had persistent problems with my throat and tonsils all my life. Last September I finally had a tonsilectomy, I had hardly any space at the back of my throat and my left tonsil was extremely enlarged, from seeing ENT consultant to op was just under 3 weeks which was amazing. Recovery wasn't as difficult as I had imagined, mainly because I think my throat has always been so bad so was kind of used to it. I had my tonsils tested and they came back clear. However, consultant said the infection ran so deep in to my tonsils and top 10% of worse cases he had seen in his career.

Tonsilectomy was the best thing I ever did and I thought that was the end of my problems. But six months later, I started to develop symptoms again, sore throat, ear ache etc. As I've said I have tried everything and nothing has worked. I can see with much difficulty  (just about) a black, white and pinkish lump just before the base of my tounge and ear ache is becoming much worse.

I have an urgent appointment with ENT consultant - but due to Corona virus this is over the phone. I really don't see what good this will do if they cannot look at the site?! I'm so worried that it may be malignancy due to the the length of time and the non response to treatememt. My GP is at a loss and did not hide their worry when we spoke before referral.

I am so anxious (as I'm sure many are) that due to corona virus I could potentially not recieve treatment and it could get worse.

I am going into work every day being strong for others in constant pain with a smile on my face and inside I just feel like breaking down. I am so so scared. When I have spoken about it with my partner he is so dismissive in my thoughts of it being something sinister, because I'm young etc.

Sorry for the long post.

B :)

  • Hello B

Im in the same boat , but my lump is in the back of my throat ... I've also got earache which has been constant for the last month. They diagnosed a cyst and I'm still being investigated for the earache. How long have you had ear pain and is it both sides?
try not to jump the gun and panic , I know it's easier said than done , most of these two week referrals turn out to be nothing they told me , over 85 per cent .
mum waiting for a face to face appointment since having a telephone appointment which was pretty pointless as they can't see anything . I'm sure you will get sorted , here if you need to chat xx

  • Hi Winnie,

It is just the left side that is affected by any pain, my left is ear is so sore and just a feeling of pressure inside my ear?!

I have a cyst in the back of my throat last year and that was another reason I was rushed for the tonsillectomy, two birds one stone. This is a completely different pain from that. Although that cyst and tonsil situ was painful too.

Thank you so much, always here for a chat too! X

  • That's exactly how I am but it's my right side .
The drs said the cyst on the back of my throat is a mucus retention cyst??? Did they ever remove your cyst or did it just go down ? I also have one tonsil bigger than the other , the right side again , but I've had an mri scan and it came back ok even though they dr still wants to see me when the face to face appointments start again . I'm dreading them saying I have to have my tonsils out as I'm a right wimp!! Lol xx

  • I was in desperate need for my tonsils to be removed, I could have only fit a pencil through my tonsils they were that swollen and so he took the opportunity to take both out. I think they only take cysts if they are a pain for a long time which mine was and the op was hurried up by the tonsils. I know they can just go on their own too!

I had mine out, it was painful I'm not going to lie, but I had such bad problems with my tonsils for as long as I could remember it wasnt as bad as some had said it was for them. I have kept getting quincys in my tonsils which are abscesses and they are extremely painful. I was so so happy that I had it done. But now this, it is very disheartening- even my GP thinks it could be something sinister, I'm only 27 I didnt think this would happen to me. But I've just got to remain positive until there is something concrete xx

  • Sounds like it was absolutely the best thing for you to get your tonsils removed .
will have everything crossed for you , let us know how you get on at your appointment. It still could absolutely be something simple and nothing to worry about . I'm 41 and they told me that was young for anything sinister so you do indeed have age on your side xx
