Wating for breast clinic referral

Sorry if this has been posted already.

2 weeks ago my GP referred me to the breast clinic after finding a lump in my breast. This is accompanied by swelling in the armpit and my nipple being swollen.

I haven't heard anything back just yet. I understand in usual circumstances that the referral process is roughly 2 weeks and the GP advised I should be seen within 2 weeks. Is anyone else facing a referral delay due to COVID-19? Or, in the experience of people in this forum, does the referral process usually take more than 2 weeks?

Many thanks for any advice that is offered x

  • Hi there. I'm worried sick as well as I was referred urgently by GP after I found a lump, I'm 53 and even though I had a clear mammogram 9 months ago.  Shocked to get an appointment letter through quickly but it's a month off.  Everyone should be seen within 2 weeks.  I know it's challenging because of Covid but it shouldn't stop our hospitals working efficiently.  I know other departments in our hospital are running extra clinics in the local private hospital to catch up but NOT for breast referrals.  I can't wait a month to know what it is so am going to pay to see a consultant privately.  It's wrong I have to do this but the worry of not knowing is terrible.

  • Hi

im so sorry you're experiencing this, it's worrying with a 2 week wait let alone a month! You've done the right thing going private I'd have done the same.

i also have a lump which I reported early last week via phone to GP and my breast clinic letter came yesterday for Friday 11th.

im 34 and have found lumps before - upon mammograms they found multiple cysts on each side however this one feels a different shape to the others.

Good luck with yours I hope it's good news!! Please let us know x

  • Hi Marywj,

I completely agree. It's such a worrying time regardless but to have to wait this long is awful. I also paid privately in the end to get seen and it was the best money I've ever spent for peace of mind.

Best of luck to you and I hope you receive good news to put your mind at rest.

  • Hi there,

ive managed to get an appointment to see the breast consultant at our local Nuffield hospital next Monday morning and hopefully will have an ultrasound as well.  I don't have health insurance and my husband lost his job during Covid so it's not ideal but we both agreed to do this to get some answers.  He had Prostate cancer 3 years ago and is now fine but the thought that we both have/had cancer is terrifying and has just highlighted my anxiety.  We have 3 children as well albeit almost grown up but they still need us both!

my thinking is hopefully just another cyst and I can calm down and get on with life.  If it's not then I have kept my NHS breast clinic appointment in a month.  Fingers crossed.  I know my local hospital are doing their best.  Apparently it is a shortage of radiographers and not appointments/nurses/consultants (who are at full stretch) that is causing the delays.

Thinking of you all if anyone is waiting for results/tests. It's torture. X

  • Went to the breast clinic today at our local Private hospital.  I wouldn't normally go down this route as I can't fault the breast clinic in our local hospital which is amazing.  I couldn't wait a month to see anyone.  Thankfully I had another large cyst that was completely fine.  No biopsy needed but they did drain it and a lot of fluid came out.  The relief is fantastic.  I would like to try to reassure anyone that a lot of lumps are simple cysts but don't become complacent.  Get everything checked out.  It will most probably be fine but best to make sure.  W xxx

  • I saw my GP around 3 and a half weeks ago, they did the usual 2 week referral but I'm still waiting for my appointment to come through. To say I'm anxious would be an understatement, breast cancer runs in my family, on both maternal and paternal side, so I'm worried. And since I've been to the Dr, literally everything I see now is to do with breast cancer. I can't seem to get away from it

  • Hi Charlotte's

Was wondering how you got on with this, how long did it take in the end for you to get an appointment after seeing the gp?

I've been told the wait in my area for urgent can be up to 10 weeks now! I'm 2 weeks into waiting and debating whether to pay £450 or more for private consultation and ultrasound. Not ideal but I'm 17 weeks pregnant and wait is killing me.

    How did yours turn out?

  • Hi if you don't mind me asking how old were you when you were reffered? As i'm in a similar boat to you were but because i'm 19 i'm facing a longer wait so wanted to compare it with yours.

  • Hi,

I was 33 when I discovered my lump. The wait would have been a lot longer if I didn't persist, my GP surgery advised I wouldn't have been seen until 2021. I complained offically to the NHS and my complaint was upheld and they advised I should have been seen within two weeks. The GP surgery got some learning outcomes, it didn't really make me feel any better but least they will think twice about referring someone. I am so glad I did listen to my body and perservered as I may not have  been so lucky. I am now over a year clear of the big C.

If you are concerned I would advise going back. Check to see if there are any changes to your lump/ breast , my nipple turned inward and the lump felt like it got bigger but that may have been in my head. Report any new changes even if you think it's only a slight change. I hope you don't have a long wait, that really is the hardest part. And  Remember most lumps are nothing to worry about. Take care x
