Persitent sore throat for 3 months with sore tongue and glan

I have had a sore throat on one one side since the start of march. I have slightly swollen glands on that side. The roof of my mouth hurts on and off. My tongue muscle hurts when I eat or talk too much and it's hard to chew. Because of covid 19 my doctors are refusing to look at my throat and keep asking me to look if it looks normal. I have no idea. I've had 2 lots of blood tests which comes back with low white blood cell count. 3rd one next wk. Ive had 3 lots of antibiotics none of which worked, I've had medication for both acid reflux and oral thrush, which did not work. I am terrified and so stressed because noone will even look at my throat because of covid. I also have a very small ulcer type lump near my tonsils. It might always have been there but as I dont know what in looking for I have no idea Please help :(

  • Hello Mjb31.

Sorry to hear about your health concerns. I am new to this forum aswell.

I'm not sure what part of the country you are in. But where i live my doctors surgery (well GP or nurse ) have been able to look inside my throat recently. I think they were hesitant before a few months back, because the coronavirus was so new and they did have a lack of PPE. So they were saying they shouldn't look because the virus could travel out of the mouth. At the time i kept thinking i don't have it and my temperature was done before going inside which was normal, and i had stayed at home and hadn't gone anywhere in 10 weeks due to having a very young baby and because of lockdown. I know that it was their guidelines to protect everyone. Now we have to wear a mask everytime we go in.

I had a throat problem ( still do) and my GP looked inside after a nurse said that she wasn't allowed a few months back. I did understand but at the time it was difficult because i needed help and was scared because i had a feeling of a lump in my throat.

I did go back a few weeks later and my GP said that if I have a problem then she can't leave me and so she had a look.

Try your doctors again and if they refuse and your worried. give 111 a call for advice and explain to them your concerns. or if you are able to you could go to your local A&E (walk in or urgent care centre) to see if they can help you. I don't see why they won't. I think it is wrong of them not to have a look at your throat If you have a major concern, then it should be checked out by a doctor.

I think some clinics are opening up now again for referrals like ENT etc that i need. Maybe you could ask for one from your doctor if that's something you think that you might need? and if your not 100% satisfied with what they tell you when you eventually are seen. They may even do it for you anyway due to your symptoms.

At the end of the day there are other health issues out there not just covid-19. I feel for you i really do and i hope you get some help.

Please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi there!
So very similar to you, I've had a persistent swollen gland on my right side for over two months now. In this time I have found it very difficult to swallow normally and it's more like a gulp. Not painful but not right and very uncomfortable. I took stuggled to see a Dr as this all started a week before lockdown in the uk. My first trip was to the hospital where I had my throat checked and was told i had pharyngitis. Two courses of antibiotics later I was still having big issues with my throat/Swallowing/Swollen Gland/Pain under Jaw. My GP took bloods they came back fine, no inflammatory markers ?! . I was told to try antifungal mouth gel.. this too did not help. Still unable to see my GP I was told over the phone by a different GP it may be Acid Reflux, 4 course of Imeprazol later I'm still taking them, all with changes to lifestyle and a bed raised at the head end. I was tho reffered to ENT . I managed to get seen on an emergency appointment and had a good inspection of Nose, Ear , Throat, camera didnt show anything of concern. He did find a lump in my neck but said was not solid and so wasn't concerned. That DR also requested MRI to be done, I had this yesterday and await the results.
3 months later, things are a lot better!
my glad is still up and down on my right side but my swallow is slowly returning to normal although kFC didn't help yesterday but I noticed this and so call that my last kfc for a while anyway.
I just wanted to share my story as i have been and still am kindda in the same boat.
Good luck with feeling well again I hope it happens soon!

  • Hi, thank you for replying and sorry to hear you are unwell too. Must be very stressful with a young baby too at the moment so thank you for taking the time. Have a 3rd blood test tomorrow and should hear back by Thursday. I have asked a few times to be referred but they keep saying that it will be rejected unless they've tried all these different medications etc because of my age. I feel like I'm just going round in circles as they are still refusing to look at my throat. If I dont get any joy this week I will have to try and go private if I can afford too as I csnt cope with the not knowing any more!

Thank you for your support and hope that you get your throat sorted too

  • Hi.

Your welcome. And thank you for your reply also.

It is very stressful because i try and homeschool my 2 older children whilst looking after my baby daughter and worrying about my health.

It has got to be so stressful for you to. I can't understand why no doctor has looked at your throat yet just because of covid-19? I know that they are being careful still but it's not fair to be left in the dark all the time. You really are not being taken seriously at all. The trouble is if something is wrong then things might get worse (I'm not trying to scare you)

For your own mental health i would try again and see what happens. And if you don't get any help then maybe going private is the way to go for you. Which i think is very unfair, because you will have to pay money out for something that the NHS should be providing you for free. But like you said it's the not knowing that is the worst.

At the end of the day it's your body and your health. You know that something isn't right. And if your trying every medicine that's been prescribed to you, and it's not working regardless of your age. Then i think its about time that someone listens to you, and gives you the help that you desperately need.

Let us know how you end up getting on with everything when you can.

Good luck and i hope you finally get somewhere.

  • I caught Coronavirus back in April. I hoped it was flu but tested positive. I was aching all over and drained of energy. Two weeks into it I began coughing like a bear. The cough subsided after 2 to 3 weeks. I felt okay for a few weeks then I felt I had a sore throat. That was the start of June. I still have a sore throat. I have been to the docs and I was told there was nothing showing. I was told it was prob reflux. I argued that it wasn't as I have suffered that for years. I was told to take omeprazole and given a anti acid bottle. This has not helped. I take strepsils eat ice cream and yogurts to try sooth my throat but it still really uncomfortable. I have made another appointment with another GP in my practice to see if they will give me a further diagnosis and try help.

  • Hi I've only just seen this post and wondered if you've gotten to the bottom of your problem, I have a similar thing going on and am very concerned

  • Did you ever get to the bottom of this? My symptoms are the exact same as yours! Had it for 2 months now and I’m drained with it all!
