Abnormality on ultrasound but not mammogram

Hi there looking for some reassurance I guess

i felt a lump, referrrd to breast unit. Had an ultrasound and they found a 3mm abnormality which was a funny shape. I am 33 and had a mammogram and a load of biopsies. They couldn't see anything on the mammogram, however.

The dr said I would find out in 2 weeks and clinicallly it doesn't look like cancer but there is something on the ultrasound and so he thinks it's 50/50. I guess I have to wait now. I'm young ish, and they used a special machine for young breast tissue for the mammogram .....do you think this is good news? I'm in shock really. I'm fit young and healthy and was expecting a cyst or something.

Hi Jazzy, i can not tell you as only your dr can do that .i know its not easy for you at this anxious moment in time, and the waiting is awful .

I do hope you can try to stop worrying as it will not make the wait any easier.I also know that is easier said than done. Try to take your mind of things by reading, listning to music , chatting with friends or doing something you enjoy.

I do hope when you get your results its good news. X

  • Thank you! I keep swinging from 'fgs it's not cancer' to freaking out wondering if I will be alive this year. Brains are ridiculous.

it's just strange that nothing is on the mammogram but is on the US? Is that normal?

  • Hi Jazzy87

Sorry that you find yourself here. The mammogram is not as good at picking up abnormalies in women with breast density, particularly in the young hence why they give ultrasounds which can see through dense breast tissue. Seeing the Dr picked up something on the ultrasound means he needs to do a biopsy/s to find out what it is, that doesnt mean its cancer, it could be something benign like fibrous tissue but he needs to diagnose what it is.

When I was at the breast clinic I was told what my likely diagnosis would be in order to prepare me so I would take some comfort in that your Dr said he doesn't think its cancer. I know its a worrying time and your imagination will go to worse case scenario but do try and reign your fears in and keep yourself busy until the results come in. Best wishes and let us know how you get on x

Hi it does happen .It happened to me had routines mamagram in August, came back clear. I statred checking my breasts as my son  was diognosed with cancer.

I found really hard lump that would not move around

I was referred to hospitals.brest clinic and had another 3 mammograms, still.nothing snowed up.Had ultrasound and it showed up there as a solid hard mass.

Has 5 biopsies, 3 from.my breast and 2 from under my arm. Metal coil marker clip i was also nserted into my breast , so i kinda knew something must be wrong.

I was told there and then she was sure it was csncer.

When i recieved my  copy of the letter  that my consultant had sent to my gp.it stated that my breast tissue was  dense and Occult  and that  sometimes this causes mamagrams to not show up anything. I I guess that happens sometimes , im 63 and woman of my age dont  usually have dense breast tissue as yonger woman do.So i think it is normal.

There are many different things that  can cause various symotoms ln the breast, but it doesnt always mean its cancer.it could be cysts, or inflammation of the breast.Try to have a good weekend  x

  • Thanks everyone

i have received my letter and will find out in a weeks time. Fingers crossed it is nothing serious. I spoke to a very lovely nurse on the phone as well.

apparently it is an 8mm lump not 3mm though. Still small I guess

  • Thank you x

a week after the breast biopsy I'm now getting the occasional ache/tingle/stab in my breast. It wasn't that painful to begin with just a bit like a bad bruise. Is that normal a week after? It's not bad enough to take pain killers but it's like I'm more aware of it now?

  • Unfortunately it is bad news and I have cancer. Hormone positive and HER negative. Waiting on lymph node tests to see if it has spread and if I need chemo. I'm in shock. I'm only 33
