left lymph node swelling - worried about troisier's sign

About 5/6 weeks ago, I found a lump in the left side of my neck - it is quite low down, I would say near (as opposed to on) my collarbone (roughly one cm above where my neck meets my collarbone). I gave it a couple of weeks or so to settle down, then contacted GP who said it appeared to be a deep cervical node, and to leave it just another ten days or so more. It still hasn't gone down,so a different GP organised blood tests (all of which came back within normal range, and no suggestion of infection). She has referred me to a specialist for further testing, so just playing the waiting game. I am a 22year old woman, no huge health issues (bar ibs and sometimes anaemia (due to heavy periods)), and normal wieight, non-smoker.

Of course, I am very anxious as I know neck lumps can mean lymphoma etc. However, I do know that lymphoma has good prognosis rates. My big fear, is that this is a 'troisier's sign'/ 'vichrow's node' - the swelling of supravicular node on the left side of the neck/collarbone, that can mean late-stage stomach/gastro cancers. I have had ibs since I was about 11/12, and my anxiety sometimes causes stomach pains. Now I am worried that these actually have been something else all along.

I keep googling and googling to try and work out if these nodes are supravicular or not - it is all very confusing, for every medical journal/website that says my lump is where the vichrow's node is, there is another article which says it is further away from the neck/deeper into the collarbone etc.

Very worried and anxious, and really do not know what to do - I don't think I mentioned the IBS when I spoke to the doctor, and I'm now worried I should have.

  • Hi hun. I'm in the same boat. I have a swelling in exactly the same place my bloods came back normal so awaiting further testing. Please dont Google. I know the internet has a wealth of information but it can drive us insane trying to find the right answer. I hope you get your appointment soon. Its a worrying time I know . I'm sorry I can't offer much more but I'm happy to chat anytime x

  • Hey!

im sorry you are having this problem!
I have a lymph node in my supraclvicular area. I have seen loads of google info on it because I have been driving myself mad since I found it in December. There's a few things

    - if which is a very small chance you had cancer at your age lymphoma is much more likely to occur at 22 than a cancer in your stomach that has mestatised.
    - have you had any symptoms such as weight loss night sweats etc ? If it was a tummy one that's spread do you have many of the symptoms of the original cancer ?

    - you say that your node is about 1 cm above where your neck meets your collarbone, from how I've read it this doesn't sound like a Virchow node at all, so mine is above my collarbone but not on my neck, it's below the neck In front of my trapeze muscle although it moves around loads and sometimes ends up at the base of my neck!

I've had mine scanned it's 3.5 mm so they say it's normal (and I have them in my armpit and neck) also is yours soft/moveable or hard and immobile? The Virchows node seems to be solid and doesn't move and quite large!!

the odds are so low but do check it with your doctor and ask for an ultrasound.   Xx

  • Thanks so much for message, I'm sorry you're going through this too! Wishing you all the best with your further tests xxx

  • Hi, thanks for your reply!

So far I've had no other obvious symptoms - I have had IBS for much of my life, so I've had my usual with that (cramping, trapped wind), but nothing seems to have changed, certainly nothing drastic like huge weight loss/ unexplained vomiting etc.

My lump is firm (not rock hard, but not soft), and I can move it (but not much further than its original position, I can roll/push it with my fingers). It is big (depending on how I'm sitting/ what angle my neck is at) - at it's biggest (when I turn my neck to the side), I need to feel it with at least two fingers to feel it's full length.

Luckily my doctor has referred me to an ENT specialist, so hopefully an ultrasound/biopsy is imminent

    xxx

  • No problem!

Ive also suffered with IBS! The constipation kind too! It only really resolved when I had my son (he is 17 months) and I'm 24 so not much difference in age ! It will get better! There are tablets you can take too!

you may have been ill that caused the lump, my mum has one about that size in her neck as does my fiancé I have one that I thought was huge but ultrasound showed it was only 4mm in its short axis so that's not so bad !! But it feels way bigger! My collarbone one is right under the skin but tiny however my dentist referred me to ENT well maxio facial but he's head of ENT too! My GP sent me for an ultrasound but it's the same 6 months on and I'm not satisfied lol! I have multiple through my body!

let me know how your ultrasound goes!
It's most likely a reactive lymph node apparently if you get coronavirus it causes a swelling of the nodes, could truly be anything !! Most likely not cancer !

    best of luck xxx

  • Hi Stormio.

I know it's been a little while since your post but I am experiencing very similar symptoms and wondered if you could share how your tests went in the end? What was the result and outcome?

Thanks so much and hope to hear from you soon :)

  • About six years ago I went to doctors for enlarged right lymph node in my neck. The normal one that sometimes sweel up when you get sore throat , but I had had no illness. He said to come back in two weeks. By two weeks it was the size of a tangerine, by the time I got to the biopsy hospital doctor visit it was the size of a grapefruit. Lots of other lymph nodes were also palpable, including the one you mentioned. His that's nothing to worry about made me think I'd better Google that when I get home. Like you it worried me sick. I was 60 so metastasised cancer and the worrying prognosis that presented was so overwhelming I was relieved when they biopsied that one and not the grapefruit one my consultant had ordered. She was really cross and didn't feel I could wait for another biopsy so started my chemo for lymphoma, the most slow growing and easy to manage of all the cancers. She said that trosiers sign was very rare and I would have felt some symptom, my only symptom throughout my lymphoma was enlarged lymph nodes. So I would try not to worry I know that's hard, but lymphoma is very treatable. Chemo shrunk all my lymph nodes by day 10 first cycle. And by my pet scan on cycle 4 of RCHOP Chemo they had all gone. My consultant went for a curative approach and it worked. If they watch the lymph nodes and only treat you when they go into transformation, the outcome is often better or as good as when first observed.

  • [@stormio123]‍ how did you get on please?
