Atypical mole dysplastic nevi

So I recently went to the dermatologist to check out my moles I have a fairly big dysplastic nevi on my leg I was diagnosed with the nevi a month or two back and was sent for some photos to be taken of the mole for them to check in a few months time if it has changed etc I just wanted to know other people's experiences with this and with dysplastic nevis I'm so nervous

  • Hi Kayleigh,

We've spoken before on an earlier post. If they are sure it's a dysplastic (atypica) mole, they may be waiting to see if it changes before they decide if it needs removing. Most dysplastic moles are removed at some point, to avoid it turning cancerous, but if it doesn't change in the coming months they may decide to leave it & ask you to contact your GP for another referral if it changes in the future.

Dysplastic moles are more common than you think - they usually appear on people who have lots of moles (100+) so are difficult to keep an eye on. My brother, niece & nephew all have had dysplastic moles removed but haven't had melanoma. I had melanoma but have no dysplastic moles! So, although it's a pain to have to keep an eye on any dysplastic moles, it actually means that any change will be picked up quickly by the patient & treated quickly!

I'm sure you will be fine - just see this as an early warning signal of what might happen but doesn't always happen!

Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie

  • Hello again angie thankyou so much for replying to my posts you have helped a lot keep my mind at ease. These past few days have been very difficult for me constantly worrying and checking the mole to see if it's changed anymore than it should have I keep overthinking and I know it's not good to do that :( I do have a lot of moles and I get so paronoid about them. If you don't mind me asking did your mole turn into to melonoma or did it appear somewhere new? You have been so brave sending you big hugs xxxx
