womb cancer

Hi, just wondering if anyone has been in

this situation,  i am 55 and had my last period 15 months ago, and have started to bleed again, it seems just like a period, and i have been reffered for an appointment under the 2 week rule, however i am petrified i could have cancer, i cant concentrate and cant stop googling.

i know there are other things it could be, but im also diabetic and know this increases the risk, is it likely that i could just be having another period, as it seems like one,  any help appreciated thanks .

  • Hi pumpkinzz

my circumstances were a little different, i was diagnosed last year at 38, after 2 years of continued periods without a break.
(pcos masked my symptoms and less than proactive gp)

all unexpected bleeding should get checked so you did the right thing. Hopefully it's nothing and doesn't always mean cancer.

I hope your appointment comes quickly as the waiting is the worst. Xx

  • I think its good they are checking into your bleeding issue, and know the waiting and worry is distressing, take one day at a time, try do things you enjoy, but I know that concentrating on anything is difficult at this time, hopefully you will have good news, and wont have to wait long for your answers.

Im 45, and have womb cancer, (Grade 2) I think its stage 1, they dont stage you until they remove it, The CT scan said it was contained in my womb, and from what I've read leads me to believe its stage 1, I'm currently waiting for a hysterectomy, which they wont do at minute due to covid, and also because I had a heart attack in march, and am on blood thinners, it was during my hospital stay that they were concerned about my being anaemic, I had gone 2 years without a period, I thought it most likely the menopause, I went to drs re a few issues I was having and was given ovestin cream, and I also tested for diabetes, which I later found out I had diabetes type 2, this was in feb 2019 last year, the ovestin cream I used for a month but I stopped using it as it seemed to start my periods again, or what I thought were really heavy periods, I thought they would eventually stop, if I did not use it. I do not believe I would of gone to the drs about it. March 2020 was when i was in hospital, after a heart attack, I needed a blood transfusion for being so anaemic they believed it had caused a strain on my heart, (I also had to have a stent put in, I had a blocked artery, which I've since found out diabetes can contribute towards it) this was when they questioned me for the reasons for me being so anaemic, I explained my history of heavy periods, thats when they decided to do a biopsy, which confirmed 2 1/2 weeks later I had cancer.

I should say that I have a history of irregular heavy periods (12 years) prior to me not having them for 2 years,  and anaemia, was told this was due to having a underactive thyroid, so when they started back up I assumed it was same and did not bother drs, if I had not had a heart attack I do not believe I would of found out I had cancer until it was more advanced, sounds silly to be thankful for a heart attack, but it probably saved my life.

Im currently on hormone therapy, the Consultant said this was to buy time until its safe to do the hysterectomy, leaving the cancer there does not feel right tho, I ve to have another CT in another couple of months, to check on everything, The first CT found a small lump in my breast which they think is fibroadenoma, but again due to blood thinners they cant do a biopsy on to make sure, they also found a couple of lung nodules, which they want to keep an eye on to make sure they dont grow, which i think it probably due to all chest infections I've had, I'm asthmatic and get chest infections easily. Sorry its such a long read.

  • Hi Leilani

I hope you're well and the waiting isn't too much. I can't even begin to imagine how worrying it must be with Covid.

I hope you haven't got too long to wait.

    all the best

    Stacey

  • I'm hoping not too long now, but it was April when they found the cancer, I'm beginning to feel like they have forgot me, again I am not sure how safe its is to leave it there long term.

I know the surgery it not going to be easy with my heart compilations, they are going to want to take me off the blood thinners, my heart attack was march they put a stent in my heart, im not due back to see cardiology till September, im due to have another CT around July/August but not heard when that will be, I might have to chase that up if i hear nothing.

Currently cancer is contained in my womb or it was at last CT, which makes me think its stage one, im guessing from what ive read, consultant said they would not stage the cancer until they had remove it, but admit the longer they leave it has being stressing me, and my family, I'm left waiting with very little information

  • That definitely would be unnerving I can see why you're worried. Have you been allocated a keyworker or nurse specialist yet? They can be incredibly helpful.
That's right about the staging, they can only estimate based on MRI/CTs I was grade one and they guessed stage 1b by my MRI and confirmed it after my surgery.
Im not sure if I'm allowed to promote another resource of help but WCSUK are helpful. Just a regular group of ladies that you may be able to get support from. They are more prominent on Facebook but have a website too. Worth a googlez

(Sorry admin if I'm not allowed to mention other sources of support)

I know some women who are in the lower stages are able to take hormones to keep it at bay and try and preserve fertility before having a hysterectomy, but I don't have any experience of that first hand.

    Good luck!

  • Yes they have me on the hormone therapy, they said it was to buy time, thanks for the info I will Google it, I was introduced to someone when they told me about the cancer, but the number that was given at that meeting,  when I tried to ring it there was no answer, probably something to do with covid19

  • Hi I am 56 and had no periods for 6 years. Then I started bleeding a little here and there. Eventually went to GP and was diagnosed with womb cancer after a hysteroscopy.  I need a full hysterectomy which has been cancelled 5 times due to covid. I understand exactly how your feeling. I'm also stage 1 but fear it's spreading after 5 1/2 months. Taking the hormones do help and I'm sure it won't be too long before you get some answers. Please let me know how you get on. It's very scary tome and we have to stay strong. But night times are hard. Good luck to you  xxx

  • Have they given you the hormone therapy?

It does worry me, like it does you, the longer they leave it, the more worrying it is.

Are you in any pain, for me it like a really bad period pain, the pain varies, but it kinda reminds you its there, then your mind plays tricks wondering what its doing, I ve not heard anything from April from the gynaecology, it kinda feels like I've being forgotten.

Have they given you another date for your hysterectomy? Thats got to be stressful especially 5 times, I hope they dont leave you much longer, keep me posted, it nice to meet someone whos at the same stage.

  • Hi I had an allergic reaction to the hormone treatment  so am now taking Letrozole. Which has some horrible side effects. I'm not in pain all the time but yes I have times when the pain is bad. Feel a like someone is trying to screw a screw in my stomach. I already take strong painkillers as I have a bad leg. But they have given me something stronger. No I still don't have a date for op and I'm getting very angry and frustrated. I work  for the NHS have done for 12 years and I feel very let down. My oncologist just rings to say still no ITU beds available and says I will ring you again in 4 weeks. I worry it's going to spread and they will want to remove something else. I'm so scared and just want it out !!! I need to go back to work and carry on living. Sorry for the rant. I hope you hear something soon and yes please keep in touch. God Bless you xxxc
